    Tax break for same-sex couples

"A new policy change means the Internal Revenue Service will recognize California's community property laws for registered domestic partners in the state.

The policy shift will now require domestic partners to combine their incomes and report half on their individual tax returns.
Tax lawyers say the reversal in policy is an incremental step in gay civil rights."

While that may be a step in the right direction (albeit in one state), a better one would be for the IRS to dismiss imputed income from the filing process. For those that aren't aware, Imputed Income is the actual cost of having your DP on your insurance policy. This must be reported to the IRS each year you list him or her on the policy. This added to your adjust gross income, meaning you will pay more in taxes because your gross pay has increased. Married couples do not have this added income.

when it comes to working towards gay rights, we have had to fight every step of the way. We have never been able to make huge jumps forward. But then again, I think the same can be said for just about every civil rights movement.
