The ref calls a penalty and nullifies an American goal that would have won the game. With the World Cup on and a very dissapointing call in the American-Slovenian game resulting in a tie, is it time for FIFA to finally do what has become commonplace in american football and currently being considered in America's baseball leagues? I think I remember an Ireland-France game leading up to the cup that ended similarly? Seems silly not to have to name the foul and player on a flag...

Yeah, that was a TOTAL job... and I question whether it was deliberate. That said, you can't challenge a penalty call with instant replay.

its funny how every time people think a call went against them, its because the referee(s) are out to get them.

sometimes they see things that you dont and sometimes they just miss calls... its not a science

Yup... doesn't mean it wasn't deliberate either.

Buffhunk64 saidDoes seem like an odd way of doing things...indiscriminately calling fouls just when you feel like it. Seems like a very fair way to determine a game. Maybe this is why Americans can't get all that excited about soccer/football. Hard to win a game 12 against 11.

typical america-centric sports fan... as if american sports have no refereeing controversies.

and it's only indiscriminate to you because you have no idea what you're talking about

I agree. Although it sucks, it happens ALL the time in soccer games and not just for America. It's the rules of the game and they have been there for a really long time and they should not change.

Irish/French relations may never be the same again after that hand ball goal in the qualifiers. See the page with 30k fans already on Facebook "Dear Mexico, thank you for beating France, Love from IRELAND."

oh i saw that! i flipped a shit at work and scared a few of my co-workers. i think they definitely need to bring instant replay into soccer, especially in the world cup when the difference between a win and a draw could be the difference between moving on to the next round and getting eliminated.

disagree, instant replay totally kills the flow of a game (see all the NBA games that grind to a halt when refs have to check the monitors), yes, they occasionally miss calls, and it sucks when your teams loses because of it but this it the nature of sports and calls even themselves out in the long run anyway... sports have lived on for centuries without instant replay, i dont understand the mass movement behind it all of a sudden

There's always a poorly refereed game or two in the World Cup -- and always a scandal or two where the referee looses control of the game, hands out two many cards, disallows a valid goal etc . Sometimes it goes your way and sometimes not.

It was also decidedly poor defence that allowed the Slovenians to score in the first place -- and that was some truly poor defence. Now hopefully go and dispatch the Algerians better than the English did -- which speaking being able to play football/soccer that was truly some dreadful playing from the English side.

Outrage over calls (good or bad) is part of what makes a soccer fan who they are. Changing the rules or adding instant replay would deny fans a part of soccer culture. If we do that what are going to do next? Are we going to ask cycling fans not to indulge in conspiracy theories?
