When you think of synchronized swimming, you imagine sequins, big smiles, gelatin in the hair and lip gloss on the teeth. Well, don't let the artistic primping fool you. Synchronized swimming is a very demanding sport, requiring incredible strength, flexibility and endurance. It's fun, too! The cliche about synchronized swimming is: "It's like lifting weights while holding your breath, with your toes pointed, smiling and running a marathon all at the same time."
OutGames competitor Stephen Houghton, a 34-year-old online marketing manager from San Francisco, came to synchro with a background in Ironman triathlon and ultra marathons, running and cycling. Stephen claims that synchro is tougher than all of them combined.
After witnessing the OutGames synchro competition and watching these athletes raise their bodies out of the water upside down in all sorts of compromising positions, we don't doubt Stephen's assessment.
