Meet a Proud Newbie
One such fitness-focused teammate is Scott Moyer, 41, who joined TNYA this past summer just as the team was getting ready for Gay Games VII in Chicago. Unlike many people who join gay teams just before the Gay Games, Moyer had no intention of competing.
"I had been swimming in New York on my own for four or five years at my gym," says Moyer. "I wanted to do something that was more formalized to push myself a little bit harder. I literally did a Google search 'gay swim team in New York' and came up with Team New York Aquatics. And I decided to give it a shot, and that's how I ended up there."
Moyer, who practices with TNYA once or twice a week, credits the team with making him a better swimmer.
"I've noticed since I've been there that I've definitely gotten stronger. The improvement in my swimming has been really fantastic; I've really enjoyed that aspect of it."

Finally took another look at this article and remembered to say, as a dedicated TNYA teammate, that some of us fall into the "middle ground" in a way; we are not the fasted or the youngest guys on the team, but we still do at least some competitions to motivate us to stay fit, do our best, and develop our social networks on the team and with other competing teams. In meets, you really compete against your self, so while you may not be a winner, you can never really be a loser. Go TNYA!
