Gay Team Spotlight: Team New York Aquatics

They don't just swim; they also throw balls. Above, TNYA's affiliated water polo team talks strategy at the Gay Games.

Sticking With It
Like many of their TNYA teammates, Mackenroth and Moyer credit TNYA with keeping them in excellent shape, both mentally and physically.

"I've personally enjoyed the challenge. [Training with TNYA has] helped me be a better swimmer," says Moyer. "I appreciate the input that the coaches give and the help from other swimmers. The improvement in my swimming has been really fantastic; I've really enjoyed that aspect of it."

Sixteen-year veteran Mackenroth says TNYA has helped him stay sane and healthy in a city known for driving its denizens insane.

"In a lot of ways the structure of the team is very mentally healthy for me," says Mackenroth. "New York is a hectic city, and it helps to have that structure. It's very cathartic to get in the pool for an hour and half and forget about whatever is going on in your life. I'm HIV positive, and I've been HIV positive since I was 20. In a lot of ways I do think that this swim team has in a sense saved my life. I'm crazy healthy, and I think a large part of that is due to swimming."

Finally took another look at this article and remembered to say, as a dedicated TNYA teammate, that some of us fall into the "middle ground" in a way; we are not the fasted or the youngest guys on the team, but we still do at least some competitions to motivate us to stay fit, do our best, and develop our social networks on the team and with other competing teams. In meets, you really compete against your self, so while you may not be a winner, you can never really be a loser. Go TNYA!
