By RealJock Staff

RealJock proudly presents this four-month series of weekly training clinics with Steve Lischin of Joe Training. Joe Training represents some of New York City’s most sought-after and respected personal trainers, including Lischin, a former competitive bodybuilder whose celebrity and professional athlete clientele come to him to build the strong, healthy, and beautiful bodies they need for their careers. Each week, Lischin gives us detailed description of one of the seminal exercises from his workout plans. You can browse through these exercises to learn proper form and technique, then incorporate them into your own workout routine. Be sure to keep your eye out for interesting variations on exercises you haven’t seen before, and learn about the pitfalls you need to avoid to prevent painful injury.

One of his most hated exercises, the leg curl is the one clients want to get out of the way fast because it’s so difficult, but the benefits are amazing, New York City trainer Steve Lischin said.

"This is a functional leg curl exercise that incorporates the glutes, core and hamstring more fully than a conventional leg curl on a machine," Lischin said.

"A functional exercise," Lischin explains are exercises "that incorporate and challenge your core stability muscles. These are exercises that relate to other activities you are going to do. They address movements you use in everyday life."

By incorporating an exercise like this, you’re going to have a lot less injury and more ability athletically. "This will keep you looking good and going strong for a long time," he said.

Low back

1. Lie down on your back on a mat with your hands extended outword. Put your heels up on the stability ball. Take something like a small medicine ball or foam block, put it between your knees and try to hold it there. Raise your hips up so your back is like a plank of wood. Keep your hips in this position throughout the exercise. Draw your knees in to your torso slowly. Go slowly.

"The ball wants to roll out from under you sideways, which adds the stability challenge and engages the core," he said.
