Pyrotech saidWho's to say we didn't vote?

A-men. I know I voted, and a number of my friends indicate that they also did so. I think the independents were really the culprits in the mid-term elections. Those indys can be fickle.

People weren't thinking of gay rights when they voted. They were concerned more about getting a job. You wouldn't believe how many people are unemployed in Milwaukee County and the statistics do not include a lot of people because their unemployment benefits have run out and many are still losing their homes. If the economy isn't any better than it is today, I' m afraid we are in for a Republican president, too, the next term. Obama has got to help bring jobs back. He should focus solely on this right now.

    Food for thought...

Recite section one of the 14th amendment and then get back to me..

I didnt serve 22 yrs without knowing that constitution I almost gave my life for..

I only did 20 in the Navy, props to you!

So, yeah, I voted blah blah blah. I'd like to pull out my soap box and add that we as citizens need to keep abreast of political issues, votes in congress and other things and at least email our elected representatives and let them know how you feel. The job doesn't end with electing, you need to keep making your voice heard - cause you know the lobbyists and the right wing, wacko, freaks that can't read the constitution and only selected parts of the bilble don't stay quiet.

Roar Gentlemen! Whenever a wild hair gets up your ass and makes you mad about something email your congressman and senators, that's what they get paid 100k+ a year to do.

As for the topic here is how I look at the whole thing.

The "Democrats" held full power for awhile, and did nothing for gays which is why so many were getting worked up and angry at Obama.. Then he threw some scraps , because these gays who get all worked up and angry are also liberals... His base and well if he fully loses his liberal base then he's even more screwed than he already is.. In other words he only cares about your numbers, not you but that's not too different from any other politician right or left. I strongly doubt he'll be re-elected, because he's just a horrible president overall... *programs response* "Oh so you think McCain would have been better?" No I do not think McCain would have been better, and my vote didn't go to him either... I don't like progressives and they are in both parties by the way.

While there are progressive liberals within the Republican party. They haven't been totally devoured by them like the "Democrats" (there is no Democratic party anymore)have and there are more conservatives within the Rep party than the "Dems".. Most of which aren't too into the gay marriage thing, or repealing DADT [newer younger ones though care less about social issues however and want to move away from the more rigid stances older conservatives have but it aint happening overnight.]..Here's where we have a problem.. The majority of Americans in this country don't like liberal progressive policy, which is what the "Dems" push. The Republicans who were headed where the "Dems" are and have been going, got their asses kicked, and now are watched hard by the Tea Party, and all Americans so they're under pressure to do good on the issues people are most concerned with... DADT and gay marriage aint 2 of em... The country is center right, and conservatives and moderate conservatives, or conservative only in policy/economics but mod to lib on social issues.. Outnumber liberals.

If the Republicans do a good job at this, trust and favoritism will go up among the Republicans and drop further for "Democrats" and if the Democrats don't pull themselves together and maybe a an activist group comes up that makes the more moderate liberals, and conservative Dems stand up, and take their party back from the uber left and progressives... Then well don't be surprised if we see less and less Democrats in office.

Both parties are still in the dog house, equally unpopular. Whoever messes up now is finished. You may hate the Tea Party people all you want, and believe whatever lies of them you wish from MSNBC (poor Keith got suspended icon_sad.gif ... LOL ) Media Matters, Huffington Post and the other failing media outlets.. The fact is average Americans independents which make and break elections, agree more with the economic protest of the Tea Party.

So the lesson is.. For those of you who believe the Dems love you, and the Reps hate you.. Get ya asses out there and start working on reclaiming the Dem party, because progressive liberal ideology doesn't go over too well with the mods, and independents. Dems (the prog libs) are all well and good with illegal immigration, because they see future votes.. Unfortunately for these Dems who don't stop and think.. While they may vote Dem... They are more conservative on social issues so they will vote no on gay issues.

And as some of you may know of me already.. I do not vote for party, and I do not and will not vote just for gay issues.. I vote for people who have the best ideas in moving the country forward especially in these dangerous times where everything can all go to hell... I'm not thinking about DADT or gay marriage when I vote... There's a lot of people like me out there too.. Gay, straight, and bi.

tongun18 saidThis may just be me but I think, with regard to DADT, we don't have anything to worry about from the Republicans. The Republicans have a reputation for giving the military pretty much anything it wants. The Secretary of Defense and the Joint Chiefs have been indicating a willingness to allow gay service members to serve openly--pending the conclusion of their internal investigation. As long as the report that's due in... three weeks I think, is favorable then the Sec. of Defense and the Joint Chiefs and the President will certify that the repeal of DADT will not harm military effectiveness. That translates to the military basically asking for a repeal. If the military asks Congress to repeal it, there really is no reason to deny them a repeal.

The Republicans filibustered the repeal at first for a couple of reasons: First, the Pentagon had yet to conclude their investigation. The military said, "not now, let us finish our investigation first". Secondly, Republicans didn't like the fact that the Democrats would not allow debate on the bill. There were a couple of Republicans (Olympia Snow, I can't remember the other) who would have voted to repeal (even in spite of the military saying it wasn't ready) but asked the Democrats to open the bill for debate first. When the Democrats refused the Republicans showed solidarity and refused to break ranks to stop McCain's filibuster.

Reading this, it appears the log cabin gays are going against what the republican party wants.

    -Doug

PS this also tells me that Obama has, then, been doing what the sec of defense and the joint chiefs and republicans want.

There's an easy test for this. How many gays would you say would vote for a party guaranteeing gay rights that also guaranteed involuntary euthanasia of disabled people and the poor?

This is so true. I get that it rubs many here the wrong way. Sorry -- get over it! They just can't fathom that some of us (probably far more than those of us who are actually vocal about it) think, live, and vote beyond our gayness. I don't think we should have to apologize about it either. We're all entitled to our own priorities based on our own personal values and needs. It's not being selfish either. It's being an individual.

Regardless, I predict that the next 2 years are going to see some solid gains for the gay movement. I think we will be pleasantly surprised. Republicans are not idiots. They know they need to lighten up on some of the social issues, and I think you will see this start to happen sooner rather than later.

Of course they did, and to be honest I don't entirely blame them because the Republicans did lose their way and made a mess. Though Dems definitely have their fair share of blame on the mess we are now in. It was on the watch of the Republicans and people were very angry with them and rightfully so.

Some of these Tea Party people even voted for him truly believing he'd change things for the better (I didn't buy into any of that BS though). This is exactly why they seem angrier at him than they were with Bush. Because they feel they've been given something different from what they voted for and hoped... Gay issues weren't in play in people voting for Obama, it was the economy... And the fact that shit got messed up on the Rep watch.
