There is an Irish pub in Downtown Durham with a large table that sits about 14 people. I sit there sometimes by myself and always end up meeting brilliant people. Durham is a brainy city. Well tonight something very different happened. I'm eating all alone when a large group of people enters. They eye my table. They want to sit there but are afraid to disturb me. So one of them sheepishly asks me if it would be all right. "Sure", I say, "this is James Joyce" (the name of the pub). I happily let them invade my space. One of them buys me a beer. I ask them where they’re from. They are from places scattered throughout the US. What brings you here, I ask? We all work for ESPN and we’re covering the Duke-Carolina (football) game tomorrow, one of them answers.
Well it just so happens; I’m going to that game and being a big college sports fan (Duke basketball here) I was in pig haven having a crew of people from ESPN sit at my table. We have a great time together chatting while they order their food. They tell me all kinds of stories about covering different events. Then they leave and I still have a full beer. The table empties out and I'm back cruising the net drinking a beer. One of the guys came back after everyone had left. "I want to take a picture of you", he says. I tried to pose but he said, "No, just work on your computer like you were when we arrived."
You have to be a college sports fan to appreciate this. I was just going out to get a bite to eat and I soon felt like one of those commercials where they TV looks so live that it enters your living room. I'm going to keep an eye out for the crew tomorrow at the game.
