Your best choice would be Houston, TX. Major metropolitan city, very progressive (The mayor is a cool lesbian named Anise Parker), very affordable housing and low cost of living, best collection of medical institutions of any city. It's an absolutely fabulous city with something different to do every weekend, two large airports to travel anywhere in the world, and a pretty big gay community.

I lived there 10 years and miss it tremendously.

Alexandria, Va ... Just across the Potomac River from DC ... is very gay- and racially-friendly. Northern Virginua is very different from the stereotypical concepts that you may have of Virginia. It's rich and cosmopolitan. Alexandria and Arlington Co both have gay rights ordinances.

But then you can get married in DC itself.

haha--I was going to suggest RI 'til I read that last bit. Gay acceptance I assume means recognition of your marriage--so your options are places like Massachusetts and Connecticut (more expensive versions of Rhode Island)--oh wait, you can move to Iowa now I think. Typical Brown students, looking down on Lil' Rhody, maybe it will suck less after you leave.

Well thanks to everyone who read and replied to this topic. It means a great deal to my husband and I. We just want what everyone else wants, a chance at a good life in a safe and fun environment. I'd like to visit TX, FL and the DC areas, personally. I think i'd like to find happiness in the DC area i.e Alexandria, VA or Arlington. These are my first choices, followed up by FL and TX. If anyone has the time and wants to help me out, by all means, please send me websites for homes, hospitals and entertainment/gay publications to view so we can plan a trip accordingly. I'd truly, greatly appreciate it. You guys have been fantastic.

Yes, I know. That's why I don't live there. But it is very gay-friendly.
