Ranges from 7% to 10% or so using that machine you hold. Forgot the name of that machine. (I did not read all the pages of this topic.) I am told that machine may be off up to a couple of points.

What you key changes the results.
    - You might think you know your height, but has it been measured precisely lately? I was surprised I was a more than a half of an inch shorter than I thought.
    - Your weight - the time of day, did you eat or drink before it, what were you wearing, effects your weight more pounds than you may realize.
    - Your choice of your activity level (athlete and so forth) is another factor that determine the body fat on this machine. People doing the measurements and you many not be perceiving this as objectively, or you may.

I was told that because my BF is low, that I would get a more precise reading by gathering as much skin on the side of my abs and measuring it with simple calibers. Supposedly this does not work as successfully with higher body fat levels. I never tried it.

It's bioelectrical impediance spectroscopy. Usually the handheld one is an Omron Body Logic.

BIA isn't the best to measure body fat (as like you stated it is often inaccurate), but they're relatively cheap and accessible.

The best way (or at least that I am aware of) is water displacement, but there are obvious difficulties involved in using this technique.

I use the fat calipers. They're easy (if you have someone to take the measurements on the back and tricep) and by far the cheapest method.

Mine told me I was at 8.3%, but I call shenanigans on the stupid handheld device... :/ There's no way I'm that low. My fat ass isn't getting any thinner...

    http://www.freedieting.com/tools/body_fat_calculator.htm

    7-10%

This scale, mentioned earlier, presumes you actually have muscles (of which I have little):

because according to this, I'm between "cut" and "hard," i.e.12-15% which is not possible.

My electronic scale with 4 electrodes underfoot says 19.5% BF but my wildass guess is closer to 13%. Don't let my vascularity fool you; that's lipoatrophy from taking Zerit (D4T) in the late 90s and Zidovudine (AZT) off and on for cumulative 8+ years. Only time will tell if I get skeletor face next.

I was 9% in my mid-30s, when in the Army and teaching college physical education courses. I know the exact percentage at that time because I was part of a US government study, to compare different methods of measuring body fat, to include the "pinch test" and underwater displacement. In my case they all gave within 1% of each other.

Now my electronic bathroom scale puts me over 30%, unhealthy & obese, in spite of my bicycling. And despite a healthy and light diet with no junk food, I'm fighting age, low testosterone, arthritis that limits my activity level, and a lowered metabolism from some of the meds I must take. Therefore I just have to live with it. icon_cry.gif
