  It's funny, I've been wondering the same about myself. My problem is that the hair on my chest and stomach don't grow uni-formally but sporadically. So the look is just not consistent, especially when hair is long.
  
  
  Although I haven't done it yet, I've been thinking about trimming because its easier to maintain. If you shave your hair completely it will grow back within a day or two and you'll end up with a stubble. I recently started shaving my armpits as well as some other areas that I won't discuss, but that is mostly for hygienic reasons. And no I don't smell like a pig, but removing hair in certain places does keep you cleaner.
  
  
  
  I myself like body hair and find it highly attractive on other guys. So the guys you speak of are probably very picky and have a hidden checklist in one of their pockets.

  I hate shaving. I have never been able to accomplish a good, smooth shave under my chin (I have a beard.) and can only imagine the hassle that shaving the rest of my admittedly light body hair would produce. I have had shaved pubes a couple of times before surgery and the itching while the hair was growing back in was not fun. Why put up with that? Unless it happened to be a problem with a particular person in a specific relationship, I would not ever go there.
  
  Clean and reasonably groomed is much more important to me than shaved.

  I have a hairy chest as well. I do par take in the art on manscaping. I have a rechargable body shaver and trimmer. Mostly I keep my chest and leg hair trimmed to a shorter length. I find it shows more definition,while still looking natural but doesnt look as out of control. Then I can let it grow out, or not depending on how I feel.
  
  I would advise against using an actual razor blade though. I've done this too and with nasty effects when the hair grows back in. The body razor is a better option.
  
  I have a good torso shot in my adult pics of my profile, you could check it out and see if you think the look would be good on you or not. And no I'm not saying this to trick you into viewing my profile

  I use to use a razor to shave everything after I was done trimming and found that it didn't work out the way as planned. I usually get a little trimmer happy and end up going too far. Almost like I need to hire out or something hahahaha. I guess, like facial hair I can just have fun with it. Thanks again for all the comments.
