I work for the State of Ohio.
Ohio Governor, Ted Strickland, signed into effect an executive order against discrimination and harassment based on orientation or perceived orientation. Problem is, this idea of "orientation" is real nebulous and elusive for some of the residual republicans and "good ol' boy network". Since I have been burned a couple of times by this type of discrimination and harassment, it has become my goal to force this to be directly defined and enforced.
I want to start a GLBT Employee Resource Group for the State of Ohio Employees, but haven't had a mechanism to suggest or get the ball rolling, until now.
The Governor has established a "suggestion website" for State Employees that he reads and responds to directly. I want to submit the suggestion, but could use some feedback. I have researched HRC and EQUALITY websites, as well as various companies’ resource groups for suggestions and references.

    General comments appreciated....

    Does your employer have one?
How did it get started, how long has it existed?
How is it utilized and by whom?
Does it help with GLBT discrimination and harassment issues?
Is it useful for employees and Management?

Go to Find their workplace section. There are some tips and best practices for how to start one. I'd also suggest (in the same web site area) looking up some of the larger companies and universities in Ohio. If they have an ERG, they might list a contact person you can ask.

I would contact the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce for workplace related issues.

It looks like Ohio also has its own chamber of commerce called Plexus...

    Well...OK I did it!
I scoured all of the sites I could and researched as much as was written.
I finally wrote and submitted my suggestion today!
I am kind of excited and nervous. I floated it past several straight, but not narrow "bellweather" friends in my office and they were impressed and liked it. They told me that it was very well written and that I have a very good and real shot at getting this to happen!...especcially since I gave my name and contact informaton and am from the home agency of the Governor's Chief of Staff...who happens to be doing the pre-screening of the e-mails and is gay..... This could be a true feather and bold step forward for gay State of Ohio employees! I am excited!
    Wish me luck!
