Do you wipe your filthy, diseased sweat off the machines at the gym?

"Either that, or you REALLY need to stop letting your boyfriend shoot in your eye. Seriously. This is the last time I'll tell you it's not good for your sight :)"

Oh my god. I have to wear goggles during my facials??

OW, we have an outbreak of MRSA infection at out ICU ward recently, so we were all re-educazted with staph strains... And your partner probably can tell me more about this as this is his specialty..

    Very simple..

Wash your hands with soap and water, EACH time you touch somehting. Do not touch your face with hands unwashed... Wash Wash Wash.

And we were told that those alcohol hand cleanser also kill staph. But it does not kill C-Diff (only soap and water.)

For the most part I DON'T wipe after using all equiptment at the gym...but if I have left ANY evidence of sweat...like when i jump on to hit my abs...then YES, absolutely. I'll spray and wash with the disinfectant. Common courtesy...and i havn't seen a single person wipe down after every use.

Thing is i don't really sweat that much when using the bench press etc...and much of the equiptment I use only has my rear end making contact...(back excersises). How many of you spray and disinfect any public chairs you may sit on when your away from home??

For those excercises that have more than my rear end making contact...I'll do fine...thankfully i have a fully functional immune system to handle the army of bacteria that is coming in contact with my skin.

Finally...like many have said here...I NEVER touch any part of my face while working out until AFTER a good 30 second hand washing with soap.

Also...I ALWAYS wash my hands BEFORE and AFTER taking a leak....the thought of gym bacteria rubbing off on my snake buddy downstairs is just as bad as unloading a universe of bacteria into my sweaty eyes!

I wipe down the equipment before I use it, I can't expect a bunch of egotistical college frat boys (which makes up the majority of the gym I go to) to be concerned for my health and well being.

The thing that really gets me though is people who are on cardio equipment, such as the eliptical trainer or exercise bikes for enough time to sweat all over it and then they just walk off without wiping them down.

Although it sounds more like OW would have to wear gloves, goggles, a condom, rubber boots, and a zip up cat-woman-esque suit.

Old people do catch cold so easily...

Maybe OW is into Rubber. He could workout in a whole outfit, complete with oxygen mask. It'd be kinda kinky, but they do wierd shit in Atlanta like that.

I suppose all the sweating in the suit might prove useful with fat loss?

In California, we are required to wear special protective gear when going to the gym

Here's what's required by Golds Gym in Oakland.

CoffeeTwink, come closer. I want to electrocute you with my defibrillation paddles.

Hey, my eye seems to be healed! The Young Faith Healer must have been sending his prayers my way while he was repairing the sink.

Now I can return to the gym and loll on the machines, sweating profusely, drooling, and clawing the vinyl, wiping the freshly waxed and sweaty eyebrows of muscleboys with my soggy towel -- with impunity. Hooray.

The gym has Purell dispensers and spray bottles of disinfectant. I used them both today and washed my hands afterward. I almost feel clean enough to touch McGay's dick.

Mmmm, I like that man in rubber. I bet his skin squeaks during frottage.

Perhaps you are right, WRE. Maybe I'll never be clean enought to fondle McGay, but it's not a big thing. Really. It's a small thing.

Ouch! So mean. But I bet in that outfit, you'd clear the gym in two seconds flat.

Staph is common at most gyms.

    Some simple rules:

    1) use a workout towel - one with an obvious front & back side. Keep the front side towards you, the back side on the equipment.

    2) yes, be courteous and wipe off your residue - but don't expect that anyone else has - and a half-ass swipe doesn't do much, anyway.

    3) DO NOT TOUCH YOUR EYES without washing your hands first.

    4) Generally speaking, keep your fingers away from your face without washing your hands. If you have to rub your face, grab a paper towel and use that. If you have to, use the back of your hand or a knuckle, but only if you must.

    5) Please don't overuse the disinfectant hand gels. Ask the American Red Cross - they are against them, the feeling being they will promote the growth of disinfectant-resistant strains. Just wash with soap & water.

    6) And please, please - if you have a cold, stay the fuck home - don't bring it to the gym with you.

A kindly message from a personal trainer. Me.

"You guys are such girls. Honestly. How did America ever become great?"

No kidding. Our ancestors made it this far without Purell hand sanitizer.

I do understand that it's nice to clean up after yourself, and that no one wants to get sick, but some of these posts manage to make attractive guys seem a lot less attractive. First comes the germaphobia, then you start bottling your pee, growing your fingernails and making giant airplanes out of wood...

Or you know, there are those who have to deal with compromised immunine systems and at a higher risk of catching staph or various other maladies. yeah, I guess that makes us "girls". :(

It's funny, I ALWAYS wipe down my cardio equipment AFTER I use it, but almost never before. I guess I'm being more courteous to the next person than I am myself.

Part of me figures that if the little bugs sit there long enough for their humid soup to dry up, they'll die. Am I wrong about that?

I HATE it when the gym does NOT put out sanitizer and towels... I go to Bally's all over Metro Detroit and there is one gym that constantly fails at having this out. Unfortunately it's the only one in the actual city of Detroit.

And speaking of Bally's... here in Michigan, most of the Bally's have hired a workforce of immigrants to clean the gym. Seriously - every single one of them is Mexican and speaks very poor English, if ANY English at all. I know at least one of them is an illegal because he hit on me in the shower and I talked to him for a bit about coming to the states and if he had a green card, etc etc - he did not and he snuck across the border.

Anyway... these guys clean the equipment - WHILE YOU ARE ON IT. And they'll use bleach and chemicals on the floor and equipment right under you while you're at 140bpm heavily breathing in all of those fumes. Plus, I saw one girl stretching almost get her hair sucked up into the vaccum cleaner because the cleaning staff was vaccuming right up to her. I mean, seriously... sure the gyms are cleaner than they used to be, but common courtesy would be nice.

And I always re-rack my free weights. I hate it when the dumbells are all over the gym. It's just laziness and arrogance.

    Hi Pipo:
I learn to clean the equipment from my trainer and partners years ago. It is a safe practice, not only when you finish, but most important, before jumping on them. Syros :)
