How can a guy who IS a homo use a phrase like, "No homo???" That'd be like me saying, "My feet always hang off the bed and I hit my head on stuff. No tall." icon_question.gificon_confused.gif

I sorta like No Homo. It let me obscenely flirt with my straight trainer, but as long as I said No Homo he was ok with it.

I don't think i've ever heard the phrase used except in a very ironic way, either by gay people, or very close straight guy friends that I know to be gay-friendly. What are the origins of the phrase, anyhow? Didn't it start as a kind of wink-nudge irony anyway?

In general, my response to things like this are to say:

Why did you say that? When you use that phrases/language like that it makes me feel uncomfortable because....

At that point, it is on them. If they continue, I probably wouldn't hang out with then for extended parts of time (if at all). I don't see the need to deal with people who aren't respectful to me and others.

I don't laugh offensive things off as that is saying it okay to say. Regardless if other people are offended (or not), if you are offended it is a problem. While I personally don't agree with all the associations to "no homo" in this forum, I do feel can be used as hate speech and showing platonic affection without the social repercussions. If it is a stranger, of course I try to modify my response to being non-confrontational, but sometimes this leads to a drawn out discussion. At least it forces both of us to think about how we interact with others and "who's watching and may say something."

Bustamante saidI'm not sure how I feel about straight guys tossing this around as much as "that's gay" What is the point of "no homo"? no gay intention implied? meh, seems kind of pathetic. I'm not sure why i'm bothered when my friend says this when i'm around.

I don't really care about "that's gay." I say it on occasion, but only to ruffle the feathers of some of my overly sensitive friends and acquaintances. "No homo" is really stupid. The first place I heard it was in a rap song...I think by Cam'ron. The lyric was "Suck a dick. No homo." Probably one of the dumbest lyrics ever written.

Yeah, rap has some guys on the DL I imagine and the "no homo" makes phrases like " I'll fuck you in the ass" a free pass, because it isn't gay if you say that. Hmm, I wonder if I can go up to a hot guy and ask if I can fuck him in the ass "no homo" think he'll say yes?

thenes saidOffensive? It's not meant to be offensive. And plenty of gay-friendly people use the phrase. It's just meant to indicate that the speaker is not actually gay after saying or doing something "gay" like complimenting a fellow male friend's looks. I swear, some of you guys will get upset over any inconspicuous thing.

I find it distasteful and smeared with a bit of homophobia.

Aside from the obvious homophobia implicit in a no homo, the main thing that phrase says to me is that the person using it is so ill at ease with himself and his place in the world, that he needs to constantly prove his heterosexuality.

Your truth is different from his truth, as this perception of what is true is subjective and dependent on the observer. I personally have no problem with it. If the guy feels so uncomfortable that he has to say it, what does it matter? Even if he turned out to be closeted, why not let the guy do whatever makes them feel more comfortable while they figure themselves out?
