I hear you. I just had mine a few days ago and it came and went with zero fanfare. As a kid, I always wanted a birthday party but never had one. I actually was invited to a couple of them growing up, but my mom and dad refused to let me go.

That kind of reminds me when my parents told me the same when I was about 11 or 12 (but it wasn't my b-day). Looking back on the conversation between them, I think they try to figure out how to make me butch it up and they thought an all boys school might be a good idea. icon_evil.gif

    Chicken pox.

My birthday is about a week before Christmas, and I almost didn't get to celebrate Christmas with my cousins since my parents didn't know if my cousins had the chicken pox or not. Turns out we all had it at the same time.

I don't think I've ever really gotten a horrible present. Some have been lackluster, but nothing truly atrocious. My mom is the worst shopper imaginable, which is ironic considering she loves to do it so much. Usually every year for my birthday and Christmas, she insists on getting me some of the blandest, ill-fitting, putty-colored slacks and makeup smudge-colored neckties imaginable. I can't convince her that, at age 38, I have plenty of clothes that fit me. I don't need clothes. I just graciously accept them, say thank you, and drop them off at Goodwill the next week.

That's exactly why my parents sent me to a rather primitive boys summer camp each year from ages 8 to 10. What they didn't anticipate was the stimulation I got from all the male nudity, with skinny dipping in creeks, taking baths in a lake together, and each group of 15 boys sharing a small cabin without privacy.

And the 16th occupants in every one of those cabins were college-age camp counselors who slept and dressed with us, likewise naked with us on a daily basis, the first grown men I had ever seen totally undressed. (The bushy pubic hair and adult genitals were a particular revelation to a number of us prepubescent boys, the sight of which might even be illegal today, but was considered acceptable in the 1950s in supervised conditions)

So that ironically my parents were inadvertently nurturing in me the very thing they were hoping to reverse with summer camp.

    Worst b-day "present"...

Long-term boyfriend (nearly 6 years at that point) asked for a loan for several hundred dollars, at a dinner that I had to pay for. And left early from.

As it turns out, I did not give him money, but he went to New York on the cheap anyway while putatively visiting his mother. I received a late gift from that... crabs. icon_mad.gificon_mad.gificon_mad.gificon_mad.gificon_mad.gif

EDIT: This year was INCOMPARABLY better icon_twisted.gificon_twisted.gificon_twisted.gif

mindgarden saidOne time during my single-digit years, my Mom decided to throw a "surprise party." So she had to invite some kids. She pretty much filled up the basement with all of the neighborhood bullies, then pushed me in there icon_rolleyes.gif SURPRISE! icon_rolleyes.gif

I'm so sorry, that really is the absolute worst present.icon_sad.gificon_lol.gif

It's unfortunate sometimes are personal lives are so divisive from our parents. Similarly, a friend of mine suffered a similar consequence. He was the school nerd bullied ever since I met him in 4th grade. In 12th grade he developed bone cancer and died. His parents unknowingly had his bullies carry the casket into the church.icon_eek.gif

The parents didn't know any better and it was a final kick to poor Gregg.

I don't do presents and people don't give them to me because I tell them anything will be donated to charity. I hate the selfish expectations associated with presents. Seriously, let's just share some cake and some time together.

I wanted a barbie playhouse for my 7th birthday and i got a sony playstation instead. True story.

I didn't really care for video games or electronics before this. I was actually quite outdoorsy. I blame this for my inactivity.
