Northern Cyprus challenged to decriminalize gay

" A legal challenge has been lodged at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) to decriminalize homosexuality in Northern Cyprus – the last place in the Council of Europe where being gay is a criminal offense."

I lived in Cyprus for four years, while serving on the British Sovereign Base Areas (i.e. small areas on the island of Cyprus, which were retained by the UK for defence purposes, when Cyprus gained independence in 1960).

Strangely, the desire of the Republic of Cyprus to rid itself of all British colonial influence did not extend to the buggery (male sex) laws, which it retained until 1998, only dropping them when the retention of these laws threatened its membership of the European Union.

It is a strange anomaly that northern Cyprus (which has been occupied by Turkey since 1974 and is therefore not under the de facto control of the Republic of Cyprus), has still retained the old 'buggery' laws. I hope they get dropped very soon. Ironically, a lot of Brits have settled in northern Cyprus or have holiday homes there. I have never heard of anyone being prosecuted for 'buggery', but it is worth bearing in mind if you intend to visit northern Cyprus.
