Odd... The Mouse That Roared by Wibberley (and the subsequent movie and it's sequels) is one of my favorite slim little books. Amazing how it never gets dated.
I know - isn't it a bit odd that she used that title? Her full title is actually The Mouse That Roared - - - The Memoirs of Harriet Hills Stinson. Inside she says "This book's title is borrowed from the 1959 film starring Peter Sellers, based on the novel by Leonard Wibberley. We use it with appreciation; no other title we could think of fits these memoirs quite so well." Written in 2010. Edited & published by Trena Cleland, First Person Narratives - personal histories. -

It's an absolutely fascinating read, not only for the stuff about monogamy you may have heard about, but for how it shows just how profound the shift from hunter-gatherer societies to agricultural societies was -- how far and quickly it took humans from how they'd spent hundreds of years evolving.

Now I'm reading John Sloan: Painter and Rebel by John Loughery. I picked it up last week in a used bookstore after seeing this painting by Sloan at the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC (The Wake of the Ferry II, 1907):

Aug 26, 2012 7:33 AM GMTI'm reading "Children Of The Street" right now. Takes place in Ghana where a detective is searching for a ruthless murderer who rapes and mutilates homeless children off the street. The author does a great job illustrating the Ghanaian setting and culture.
I read a book about Weather before this one. Lol -

Aug 26, 2012 10:43 AM GMTI broke my leg a couple of months ago, so doing a lot of reading. My bum is now flat, used to be not bad. Anyway, decided to go back and read some gay authors that I missed from being too busy at the time. I just finished last night,
"The Married Man" by Edmund White. It was very funny but also depressing because it is about a couple, one of which is dying of AIDS and eventually does. It is also like a travelogue because they visit or live in Paris, Providence RI, Key West, Morrocco, the south of France, Rome and other places in Italy.
I started this morning, "Like People in History" by Felice Picano. Just started so do not know anything about it yet accept it is touted as a Gay Gone with the Wind.
I am reading one philosophical book and one history book on the Renaissance, both of which I read at a slower pace in between the more entertaining books. The philosophical book is "Light on Life, the yoga journey to wholeness, inner peace and ultimate freedom" by BKS Iyengar. -

I've read more this year than the last 2-3 years combined, thanks to my Nook. Of course, I probably have 20 books on my shelf that I haven't read, but, boy, that contraption sure makes it convenient to travel/read. -
