I'm not sure about gay culture, but I see why he called him that. If your friend showed signs of not liking it, then yeah he should have stopped, but I can see why he called him that in the first place.

Personally I don't like being defined by first impressions or appearances. I don't know why people do it.

The important thing is you deftly cleaned out his wallet during the scuffle...

Would tend to agree.... if you haven't been exposed to the scene, so to speak, you have to give some allowance. It might have sounded a little offensive, but blow it off and move on. I doubt if it was meant as any sort of insult.

When I go out, I have a blast, just be flexible with some of it...

"Fat ass" would have been insulting. "Baby bear" not so much. Why didn't you just walk away if it was such a big deal?

I get you but it depends on how the guy meant it.
Generally I also would not comment on appearance if meeting a person for the first time.
If he didn't mean it offensively then I wouldn't have bothered being offended.
You never know though, lots of people have all kinds of fetishes and so maybe he is particularly attracted to "baby bears" and meant it in that way.

There's many times in life to tell people to fuck off. This was one of them.

Oh for goodness sake, "baby bear" is quite clearly a term of endearment?
