I'm now 10 weeks out and getting really excited! Thought I would post a pic of my progress from when I started cutting until now. When I started back at the beginning of December, I had just come off a big bulk where I had allowed myself to put on some fat for the sake of putting on some muscle mass. It's good to have my abs back again. Hope everyone's prep is going well -- would love to see your progress!

    You're looking fantastic....

Question though: is it standard to go through such a long cut period (rather than say 4 weeks)? Maybe it depends on how long your prior bulking phase was?

I'm going through a cutting period now mostly by going Paleo and have lost 8 lbs in 2 weeks... I'd definitely need to up my calories if my cut period was greater than 5 weeks, i think.

I think a lot depends on how much fat you have to lose. If you're pretty close to your competition weight you'd probably be able to get away with 4-8 weeks. The issue you run into is if you have a lot to lose and you try to do it quickly you have to use methods like drastic caloric deficits or huge amounts of cardio. Both of these can result in losing a lot of muscle mass in addition to fat. We decided to go with a long, steady cut to try and preserve as much muscle as possible. It's been great. My cardio schedule is manageable (40 min 5x/week) and I'm still eating around 2,800 kcal per day, just slightly under my maintenance caloric rate. Right now I'm losing around 1.5 lbs per week.

It's looking great and I'm gonna use this as inspiration for my own cut, which should have me seeing my abs for the first time in my life before the spring....

There are Master's divisions at most shows for 45+, 55+ and *gasp* 35+ (which I'll be in only a few short years). You should go for it! icon_biggrin.gif

Problem with that is...then generally aren't you competing with guys who may have been competing for 30 years?

Thought I would update again. I'm now 3 weeks out from my competition and working hard to get my body fat percentage down, get the abs carved up and maintain as much of my size as possible. I have to admit, the dieting, cardio and training have been really intense and I'm not sure I would chose to do it again, but maybe a plastic trophy will change all that... time will tell!

Ok, this will probably be my last update on this thread til after the show on Saturday. But here I am, two days out:

    IMG_1451_resized_zps5a730c32.jpg

I'm feeling ready! We are doing some water manipulation now, so I'm drinking 2 gallons today, cutting it to 1 tomorrow, 1/2 Friday and sips for show day while using a natural diuretic. Hoping to look pretty shrink wrapped. Friday I also get the pleasure of having someone paint me dark brown so I don't look washed out on stage.

This has been one of the most physically and emotionally challenging things I've ever done. I'd recommend it to anyone!

Wow man you look like a winner!!! I'd like to get into bodybuilding!! Maybe I'll start some serious lifting and food intake like the end of this year after I settle in to new place.

You look fantastic -- great work!! Be sure to let us know how things go this weekend. I did my first show last year and I wondered if I would do it again.

I'm doing it again this year and I am so excited. The dieting and training are still tough but your body and mind are more prepared. Your body knows you are not trying to kill it icon_smile.gif

    Again -- good luck!!

I want to in 2014 I think. It's my goal right now to get a coach once I'm settled into my new home next month. As a former fat kid, it's really something I want to do for myself icon_smile.gif.

They changed the Lonestar to an earlier date so I have to re-configure! Looking for a local comp, probably in Ft. Worth for July, then will do the Central Texas Shootout in Aug, and the NPC Heart of Texas in Sept.

I am 54, 235 lbs currently, 50c, 30w, 19.5a. Planning to get up to 245, then cut to 215 or 220. Will be posting new pics soon, then progress pics.

Wish me luck! And contributions are welcome!

you look great, good luck....you mentioned you are doing the physique not bodybuilding...what is the judging like and what are the things they look for as opposed to a bodybuilding competition

Pardon my ignorance or stupidity but I often see bodybuilders etc using "16 weeks out, 8 weeks out" what does "out" here stand for? Thanks.
