The World Junior Championships started this morning. Every year, this is THE best hockey tournament in the world. All the best junior players (from 16 to 19) battle in a 10 team tournament to find out what team is the best in the world.

What makes this so exciting is that just like in junior hockey, teams go through cycles. Some years, some teams will be much better than in other years. Every year you have 2-4 teams who can win it all, so it makes for great hockey.
Canada and Russia are usually part of the favorites, but depending on the years, Sweden, Finland and even the Czech Republic and the Slovaks can be very competitive. Germany and Switzerland are usually there to play spoilers and even try for a bronze.

GREAT tournament, and it just started this morning. (it`s in Russia this year)

    First games:

    Canada 9 Germany 3
    Finland 5 Latvia 1

calibro saidwhy would this be better than watching professionals play?

The professionals do not have a tournament that pits the best vs the best out of each country every year. Once in a while they have the Olympic tournament, or they used to have the Canada cup or such tournaments, but it`s not something that happens every year like the WJC.

The NHL has too many teams so quite often you get boring matches with players that shouldn`t even be in the top league in the world. Not only that, but some decent name players are now even playing in the KHL. The NHL playoffs is more of an endurance tournament than a tournament of who is the best in the world.

IMO, the WJC is the best hockey tournament out there. icon_smile.gif

USA vs Sweden in the final.

What a game yesterday between Sweden and Russia..

That means that Canada vs Russia is the bronze medal game. A lot of people expected this to be the gold medal game.

Germany avoided relegation this morning as they beat Latvia. Latvia will be replaced by Norway next year in the main group.

Fun to see good hockey right now.. too bad the games are so damn early icon_smile.gif

Go team USA. Proud to say John Gibson is an Anaheim Ducks prospect and Rickard Rakell and William Karlsson. Either way one or more Ducks prospect will be winning Gold this year again.

Canada choked hard (got up at 4 am for nothing), hope they at least get some redemption from last year and beat Russia. Cheering on Sweden for the gold!!!
