The logo itself isn't that bad... although the font looks like it was picked out of MS Word '97...

The tail looks like an 8-bit version of the US Flag... icon_neutral.gif

It does seem as if they're all moving to a more bland, homogenous look.

I recall reading a few years ago that one of the design snafus in one of the new mega-planes (maybe the A380) was that some engineer forgot to include the weight of the paint. I wonder... nah, the paint would weigh almost the same no matter which color it is.

I read somewhere that red is the heaviest, due to the amount of pigments required. Not a huge consideration, but fairly significant, if you're flying hundreds of aircraft millions of miles per year.

I love that... It's keeping in view that American's the flagship airline of the US... Please... You call flagship late arrivals, planes that are old and smell like grandma's farts? Come on American Airlines, this is laziness... I am totally with the fact they stole the idea from BA.

    Cheers,

    Sean

RSnSD saidI was disappointed with what they chose, but a rebranding was long overdue, especially if they want to have a fresh start when they exit from bankruptcy. I like the new logo and refreshed font, however does anyone else see the close resemblance to this one:

The tail design just seems like a cheap, arrogant use of the American flag. I think it would have looked better to carry over the logo element into the tail somehow.

There were bunch of other concepts out there and was hoping for something similar to either one of these:

    Old branding with modern refresh:

Old logo with simple, minimalist feel:

    Same one, but retaining Eagle:

Or completely new, modern design retaining classic Eagle elements:

    I vote for number 2!!

i wonder if doug parker will change anything if the merger takes place. what i would like to see is a modified eagle logo with one of the eagle wings a trapazoid version of the USAirways flag. that might look good as opposed to the chicken peeking out of a shower curtain. i do not mean to insult any rj AA'rs out there, i just think the new look is a little bland. i hope the plane does not become a danger on the runway in fog. would sort of blend in.

Paint it any color you like.
AA's true colors always come through via their service.

Which means that AA's true colors are all shades of "shit brown".

Every once in a while I am forced to fly AA and am reminded why they are NOT my airline of choice.

American, US Airways, Delta, United. They'll all be one airline eventually anyway, right?

I had an overnight flight a couple months ago from DFW to Santiago, Chile, on an old 767, and there was only one movie in 8 hours. And only a handful of monitors in the aisles, so lots of us couldn't really see it anyway. I'm used to a personal screen on the seatback in front of me whenever I fly international.

I don't like the livery - it's too gaudy for the simplicity of the logo, but the logo is outstanding.

It's so simple, but suggests so much. A soaring eagle, an airplane, the letter A, a star. I don't know why they didn't use the design for the tail fin, as it seems to be the approximate shape.

The old logo was stodgy and cluttered.

There's a considerable number of people who just generally have little patience for branding and marketing and would hate anything that they came up with. I can sympathize with that viewpoint, but judged on its own merits, it's a great logo.

Have anyone seen the documentary Helvetica? They interview the AA logo designer who made it in 1953 or around then, and he says "All other airlines have changed logos, not American, they don't need to, its perfect."

I wonder what that guy thinks of the new look. They still use the Helvetica font. So he'll probably be okay with it. I'm not sure what to think of the new logo, I don't hate it, but I don't love it.

Did they merge with another company and have to change branding like Sprint and at&t did?

here is what mr. vignelli (the original logo designer) thinks. as for the merger, doug parker, ceo of us airways, has been circling AA like a vulture ever since they filed for bankruptcy. he's doing everything he can to snatch this airline while it is still in chapter 11. tom horton, president of AA, is really pushing back because if he gets AA out of ch11 on it's own, he gets a HUGE MULTIMILLION DOLLAR bonus. the creditors and wall street however, think the best path for AA is to be purchased by US. only time will tell, but, there should be an announcement on or about the 8th of february after the US pilots finish voting on a bridge agreement between the pilots of both carriers. i do think that if parker get's AA, the new livery will be updated again as i have heard rumors he personally hates the rebrand, especially the eagle logo.

I don't mind it. I like American. I made lifetime Platinum in the days when they counted credit card miles. I've almost always been able to go where I want with an award, and I get upgraded a fair parentage of the time.
