Agreed. Religion is the best way to indoctrinate the weak willed and force them to live a certain way. Islam is not the problem, the issue is with the Clerics who push laws that are not even in the Qur'an. Sadly this will always be the case as long as religion is allowed to run rampant. Humans will use "religion" to dominate others

    I agree with you here.

shutoman saidUS, for instance, has considerable anti-gay backlash, as we all know, despite having a formal distinction between church and State.

Maybe some one can correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think either the federal or state governments of the United States has ever executed someone for being gay.

I know there are sodomy laws "on the books" in many states but I don't think anyone has been put to death simply for being homosexual in the United States.

Correct, the only gay deaths have been hate crimes by homophobic people.

Now you have Eastern Europe, which had been under decades of government-supported atheism, experiencing a resurgence in religion (minus Czech Republic and Estonia) and even more problems against LGBT people even though homosexuality was decriminalized in all these countries since the '90s.

Even though the economy and standards of living in Eastern Europe have changed a lot in the past two decades, a lot of things have obviously not changed since communist times. The more things change, the more they stay the same, eh?

Religion is not the problem as you point out in your second sentence. It is individual adherents who misappropriate religion for their own agenda. I don't know of any Christian scriptures that teach that homosexuals or any sinners are to be killed. I can't speak for Islam or Buddism or Hinduism because I'm not nor ever was a follower. Someone else will have to educate us on those.

In the following countries, homosexual acts are punishable by death:

    Sudan
    Somalia
    Mauritania
    Yemen
    Saudi Arabia
    Iran
    United Arab Emirates
    ALL MUSLIM COUNTRIES
Thanks to the religion of peace

Six countries afford gay couples marriage with full legal rights:
    South Africa
    Spain
    Belgium
    Norway
    Sweden
    Canada
    ALL CHRISTIAN COUNTRIES

Yeah that's totally not true. I'm so sick of hearing people excuse/dismiss/ignore muslims because Christianity was "just as bad." The truth is, more poeple die in one year in the name of Islam than died in all 350 years of the Spanish Inquisition. Since 9/11 there have been over 20000 fatal Islamic terrorist attacks. Christianity has never been that brutal.

I don't know about that. Even though Spain and Portugal were under Islamic rule for 800 years, the Reconquista by the Christians did a hell of a job of killing, converting, deporting, or exiling every non-Christian in a very short amount of time. Jewish culture actually flourished when Muslims dominated the Iberian Peninsula (though tolerance did vary throughout the centuries) until the Christians demanded to wipe them out.

Ah, a voice of reason, but don't expect it to carry any weight here. Many here believe only religious adherents can be bigots and never let facts get in the way of a good story.

I can, Buddhism, though thought of a Religion is more of a Belief System, which centers on Self and Enlightenment. Buddhists do not care of you are gay or str8. They only believe that having an affair with another's loved one is good. However: "Some later traditions do feature sanction of homosexual contact. However, some, including the current Dalai Lama, uphold that any form of sexual expression other than monogamous vaginal sex within a heterosexual relationship violates the Third Precept of Buddhism." That thought is not universally held throughout Buddhists.

If it were for christianity we would all be dead by now. These are simply free countries where their population has a voice that can be heard and a decent level of education plus high quality of living standards.

Let me also point out that the only democratic party in Sweden that voted against ANY kind of LGBTQ-rights whether it was marriage, adoption, etc. is the party named "the Christian Democrats".

So do me a favour and educate yourself of how Sweden came to legislate gay marriage and which parties were against it; before using it to propagandize how awesome christianity is in regard to LGBTQ-rights.

Has there not been a thread like this before? There is the need to claim that one view is right and one is wrong. This is false. Get yourself educated before claiming to be an expert on what you are not.

Destinharbor"Religion is the problem. It promotes authoritarian top-down power structure and all tyrants need an enemy to scare the mindless masses."

I see what you're saying Destinharbor, but I'm not sure it's that simple. US, for instance, has considerable anti-gay backlash, as we all know, despite having a formal distinction between church and State.

Norway, Sweden, Spain, Belgium and even Canada are nominally Constitutionally Christian as they have christian constitutional monarchs.

In the EU it was Spain that has led the way socially in gay liberation.

So, it's difficult to define a secular and religious state. The legal status and the social status are very different and in England it was the Puritans that, initially at least, led the call for democracy.

China, USSR, Cambodia, Albania, etc all had draconian punishments for being gay. All were avowedly atheist.

Well Albania was always Muslim !
USSR & China are barbaric from their culture & not just religions ..insane

i bet all organized religions attacked homosexuals " first Judaism led by Moses" , then "Mohammad who worshiped Moses like an idol "

I bet Jesus who made changes in the biblical laws also would have had made changes in the laws for gays & giving them a social life BUT im sure catholic church didnt publish that gospel

    Now i just hate religions
