A_X91 saidWell like I said already I've been going around the idea of closing my account here.
I feel like I need to I don't know just get out there and do something else, to be honest I don't have a clear idea on why I should close it but for some reason I think I need to do it.
Maybe just for a while, maybe for good.

So any of you guys who've done this before, why did you leave? Do you think it was good idea?

    Thanks in advance guys.

As I said in the other thread, consider hiding your profile and taking a break rather than deleting your profile. You may decide to come back later when you've had a chance to clear your head. There really isn't much benefit to deleting your account.

I've had to take a few breaks myself when real life gets too crazy. Virtual life can wait. It'll still be here if you decide to come back.

I would like to say don't leave but that's selfish.
Obviously if you need a time out I'll support you on that!
I only hope that you're doing ok, and will return to us once you feel better.

I left facebook for a while. I had my roommate change my password so I couldn't log in. I am noticing that I am pretty addicted to this as well.

For me its about habit change. All social media has a useful purpose, but when it overwhelms and becomes habitual it's bad. I tend to fall into those traps.

I'm itching to get back on scruff as well... haven't yet.

If you need to leave, do it. Once the habit is broken, you might come back. You might not. It's all OK.

    But nobody actually does leave.

A better question would be "Why don't people leave RJ?"

ConfederateGhost saidSincerely though..with no negative connotation attached, if you don't feel disciplined enough to balance internet and reality...maybe stepping away is the best thing to do for now. You can always come back if you really want/when you are ready.

    Thanks, man icon_wink.gif.

I agree with this. It is all about balance when it comes to being on RJ or any pseudo-dating/health/hookup site. What are you doing outside of RJ to balance what you do on the computer and the amount of time you spend online? You probably feel the way you do because of the inherent want to get outside! Unless you are like most of the forum posters and burn in the light of day.

We take breaks from time to time to get away from it and grow. RJ is great and has a great sense of community out here but meat space is nice too.

child, 214 posts in only a year? You aint got nothing to worry about. Trust me, there are some who have 23,000 in a year on this board. And that's okay.

There can be a whole variety of reasons.. changes in life (as in dating), moving, work obligations. Those of us who have been here a long time probably have thoroughly enjoyed it, myself included, but it varies.
Sometimes we recognize it is a "time waster" I suppose. I give a bit of time, but nothing addictive on a regular basis. It works.

Depending on who's active at the time, RJ can be fun, it can be a way to meet interesting and unexpected friends and have exciting adventures [e.g. 6 day winter hike in the mountains of Idaho with the long departed chewey_delt]. It's great for motivation, for fitness tips and for seeing how other people think about things.

It's less fun when people turn out to be crazy, obnoxious and breathtakingly stupid. It's tragic when people who are gay turn out to be narrow-minded, unthinking, etc. Of course, this is true of every internet site ever...

My simple rule is: if participation in an internet community is helping you have a better real life... keep it up; if not, don't.

As has been said, it's better to fade in and out that perform one of the many ridiculous "CRUEL WORLD I'M LEAVING, ADIEU!" threads followed the next day by "OMG I'M BACK!".

I guess the thing I've been surprised to learn from RJ is how insecure so many gay men are... if this were a better community, we might want to think about how we could deal with that. The best threads on here, imho, have been where community touches of empathy showed through. But the site is an oxymoron: a "Jock" is a fiction, not a person... how can it be "Real"?

The real reason I keep coming back is that the intersection of the "Real" and the performative is so interesting here.

Think of this as your "summer cottage" that you "vacation" at....Nobody lives there all year long, just as long as is comfortable....when you leave you shutter the place and lock it up, to go back to your other home(s). If and when you return, it is always there for your return...you know what it is and where everything is....I regularly take brakes of several weeks from the site entirely, or sometimes just lurk and not post.....icon_cool.gif take care either way.
