OK, a little secret.... I have a fetish and its about Christmas. If you are in my house, we can walk to a certain closet door and when I open it I have a 5 foot high pile of Department 56 "village" pieces.

Department 56 started the "christmas house" craze in the late 1980's with their various quality village pieces including the (in my opinion) less popular Snow Village, the Dickens Village (which I have), New England, Christmas in the City, North Pole and Alpine Village. Today, the company has expanded way beyond those villages.

Probably a fad that has had its heyday.... and my collection can be blamed on my mother! Those 2 little plastic churches she had when I was a baby did it... LOL.

Thousands have been spent. I really have decreased the amount I spend over the last 5 years or so as it has become a little repetitive. Last Christmas, RJ member PAMEDIC sent me a village piece since he also collects the series. Do you have a Christmas collection?

Have you been to a Dept 56 store? The one in Mall of America in Bloomington, MN (Twin Cities) is fantastic.

My first villages began with Christmas, 1954, when they would be part of a Lionel train display. I later made my own by hand. Now my partner does modest Christmas villages, some Dept 56 items, others Hallmark stuff or other brands. And almost always a nostalgic look at a time long ago, too idealized to have ever really existed, but what we WANT to have been.

And needless to say, incredibly gay. LOL!

I've heard its unbelievable... it would be great to hear from someone who goes to that Mall what sorts of displays they have up each year.
