Completed the 165-mile SMART Ride to Key West on Saturday, just got back today (Tues, 11-15). Managed to pedal every fucking foot of it, didn't need any help from the sweep vehicles.
Only crashed once, when I overshifted and my chain slipped off the sprocket while climbing up a high bridge, got a minor knee scrape. Rode with my blue handicapped vehicle parking permit hanging from my handlebars -- LOL! Some major "road rash" for a few of the riders, but no serious injuries.
Our biggest numbers ever, 600 riders & crew, $188k more raised than in 2007. Will have pics when the official photographs are posted to the SMART Ride web site.
Thanks to those who contributed money on my behalf. I believe some were from RJ, but their real names (for credit card purposes) don't match anyone's screen names. I'd like to directly thank all RJers who donated, but I don't know who you are unless you choose to tell me.
The closing ceremony in Key West on Sat featured Leslie Jordan, the gay actor on "Will & Grace," and in the movie and LOGO series "Sordid Lives." My partner and I then stayed at a gay guest house there until this Tuesday morning, giving ourselves a little vacation. Now back in Fort Lauderdale.
Pics will be posted when the SMART Ride web site is updated with the 2008 photos. Here's a local TV channel's story, with a video of our Friday ride-out. Check the rider with the blue handicapped permit on his black handlebar bag, with an orange & silver helmet, when the camera pans back for a second shot of the departing bikers - that's me!
