I was getting ready to start my workout routine tonight when my dad told me it might be better for me when I do my bench press to start at a lower weight and then just add weight the next set. I have finally gotten to benching 115lbs(hey for me that's quite an accomplishment). He was saying that I should start around 105lbs or 110lbs so that way my muscles get used to it. Is this something that might help my joints and muscles or is this something I shouldn't really worry about?

It's not cut in stone - but that is a very accepted way to do your sets...
I've also had trainers that say that it should be the exact opposite and that you should do your sets with declining wgts because your muscle strength goes down with each set

It is more form then anything else. Choose a comfortable weight then at five seconds lift and 5 seconds decend, you can burn out the last set (get sloppy with it) because it will be very difficult at that point.
