    MunchingZombie saidHow about

Uganda where you can be imprisoned for life and is mostly Christian
Angola where you can go to a labor camp for life
Nigera 50/50 Christian/Muslim where the penalty is death
The Barbados - life in prison

life in prison is death by incarceration. Christian nations in the Caribbean have atrocious human rights records with regard to GLBT populations.

and there isn't enough room in my ass for your horse. Orson Wells is napping.

I'm sorry but I said specifically DEATH, not life in prison.

Now you are constructing an extra argument saying that life in prison equals death. That is not the same thing. Life in prison sucks and is arguably as bad as death. And you've successfully shown me other countries that are not predominantly Muslim that have sodomy laws still. However, my statement that Muslim countries are the only countries with the death penalty still holds true. You have yet to discredit that statement. And no, life in prison is not the death penalty. Close, but try again. I'll at least respect you for trying.

Now let's work on trying to discredit my argument, because thus far you have failed. ;)

    Well, specifically you said
jakebensonThere are MANY laws reinforcing jail time and DEATH sentences to homosexuals ONLY in Muslim countries.

and I don't see the real difference between life in prison and death. I am not familiar with each of these nations' legal systems. In the US life could mean 20 years. But in Bangladesh that could mean life with no parol. Though, I did put Nigeria up there which will put people to death.

The common thread between nations that have laws against Sodomy is not religion. Turkey is relatively progressive concerning GLBT rights. Christian nations can be as great as Norway (does that count as Christian these days?) or horrid like Jamaica. Again, religion is not the common thread. We cannot even deal with each of these nations categorically as unjustness of these laws range from death in Saudi Arabia to a different age of consent in Greece. Each nation needs to be looked at individually as to why they suck.

    Also, @sxypalestinian

Middle Eastern culture is linked 100% to its religious roots. Trying to separate culture from religion in the fertile crescent is futile and would in fact devoid the "culture" of all expression. Just on the basis of literary expression alone, Middle Easter life is full of customary religious expressions.

As a middle eastern person I one, don't think Jake has bad breath and two, am ashamed that I am from an area with such an archaic lifestyle.

    Dear MunchieZombie,

    Case by case basis huh?

    Go here: http://www.sodomylaws.org/

Click on world sodomy laws. Notice how sodomy completely legal in ALL of Europe and completely illegal in ALL of the Middle East except for Israel and Jordan (and maybe Iraq but I'm betting not). That's not a case by base basis. That's a correlation.

I would date a Muslim and/or a Middle Easterner in a heart beat. In fact, I dated one a few months ago. He listened to music in Arabic. I thought it was sexy. It's very clear I hate gay-bashing, women beating, Jew-hating, plane into 9-11 Muslim extremists though.

Saying I'm racist doesn't discredit anything I say. You've never actually addressed my argument, just my personality. So you failed at all of your attempts to counter-argue. As for discrediting people and their culture, you constantly attack Caesarea in his Israeli-Palestinian thread. Sounds like your argument tactics are exactly what your trying to accuse me of.

Not true Pinny... There are many atheist Middle Easterners out there. I as a Middle Eastern is not very religious and I don't practice my Christianity faith. Although, I am very proud of my Palestinian/Middle Eastern heritage and culture.

You shouldn't be ashamed who you are Pinny. Oh don't hate yourself.

First of all, I love who I am and I love my background. I embrace and share it with all those around me. I am ashamed, however, that I am associated with barbaric laws by default. Your slippery-slope argument can be turned on you to say that you love persecuting gays if you are so "proud" of your Palestinian culture. Please don't use such illogical arguments. They only weaken yours.

Secondly, please read what I wrote. You skipped it completely. Never once did I say that all Arabs are religious. I stated the fact that it is impossible to separate religion and middle eastern culture. Your "not true" argument doesn't cut it as a rebuttal. It is simple socio-semantics in that all greetings, blessings, signs of fatigue, enjoyment, best wishes all of them are an invocation (on some level) of a God-head. People say these expressions daily and while they do not mean the sub-contained religious sentiment invoked, they still are stating it.

It would be like in English going around and not saying hello but:

    God is with you?
    Yes he is with me.
    How are you doing?
Thank God I am doing great.
O isn't God wonderful for blessing us with goodness?
    What are you doing today?
    Seeing my God-willed children.
O Mother of the Chosen-One that must make you happy.
    Indeed it does.
Well have a good day and may God keep you.
    God keep you too.

I am fluent in Arabic and I assume you are too, you cannot deny the fact that the language is centered around a socio-religious vocabulary.

The argument still remains and it has nothing to do with religious or not. The root of modern Arabic is still as religiously charged as it was after the secularization of the Middle East.

I do agree that American intervention has not depolarized the backwards sentiment and lifestyle lead by the general middle easterner populace (if anything, from my observation it has been hyperpolarized) ... however I am with Pinny on this, so much of culture and lifestyle is dictated by religious dogma and authoritarianism in the middle east.

While progress isn't nonexistent in the region, Lebanon for example prints a quarterly LGBT magazine in Arabic called Barra, but only when these countries work towards becoming more like Turkey than, say, Saudi Arabia, can any shame or antagonism felt towards any Muslim or Non-Muslim nation with primitive anti-gay laws, be lifted. Unfortunately, as is the case of "liberated" Iraq, there doesn't seem to be much of a move towards that end of the spectrum. As Pinny suggested, it's cemented into the language and culture.

    ______

For the record, I am Iraqi, and also fluent in Arabic and its nuances, brought up among Iraqis in a Muslim community here in the states, which was like living in a a village characteristic of The Parable or The Scarlet Letter. Granted, I am extremely bitter which may have an influence on this post, but my sentiment doesn't change that antiquarian inventions do not mean much in the modern world ... quality and value of human life do.

Well, if you want to ignore that the worlds largest Muslim nation (Indonesia) does not have such laws. If you want to ignore that several nations (Jordan, Turkey, Kuwait, Iraq) do not have such laws then you are free to. But it seems like you have a better case for geographic correlation than you do religious correlation. And again, you appear free to ignore all the Christian nations with these laws.

Why is it so important for you to pin homophobia square on Islam when homophobia is alive and well in much of the world? I am not trying to forgive nations that have barbaric laws but your line of reasoning seems symptomatic of the anti-Muslim bigotry rampant these days.

You can say you are ashamed of our Middle Easterner's law or government, not our culture. See the different?

That is what I told you to do. The comment is hardly original and the ending statement is rather patronizing considering you are being hypocritical in that I am the one who claimed you can be ashamed of the politics and still be proud of who you are. If what you said in previous posts were true than 80% of those who criticized the Bush Admin would have to be accused of the same "blasphemy" of which you were accusing me.

Furthermore, did you seriously tell us to read that book. The classical lit book about Ali Baba, Sinbad, etc...? I am not understanding how that falls into queer discourse especially middle eastern discourse.

Sxypalestinian, I do not believe you are reading what I am posting, instead you are taking all the arguments personally and making simple anecdotal comments supplemented with google search pictures.

My point still remains un-refuted, you cannot separate the religious influence of the past two centuries on the Arabic language and thus (inherently) must accept its context in the culture. Whether or not one believes in God or is progressive ideas towards gay rights has nothing to do with his use of a language full of religious dialogue.

I am glad Onmyway brought up Barra because it is a good demonstration of the existing paradox of most progressive Middle Eastern countries.
