This seems to be the question for the ages. In this context (gay men discussing) it seems to something interesting. While we were AD and working out in the base gyms, nudity was no issue whatsoever, both the in-passing nudity (on the way to/from the showers and often at the sinks) and also the around-the-lockers-socializing (or, often, talking about some aspect of our work, not so much socializing). It was much like an athletic team's locker room in that respect: the nudity was completely circumstantial. But in the private sector, there seem to be all sorts of trends or multiple norms, with "older guys" (like us and older) far more comfortable or even reflexively not covering up as opposed to the "towel dancers" as many have referred to them here. On the very rare occasion when there are oglers, they either "get the message" or they get overtly called out, at least in our experience. But some of the "Today At The Gym" posts certainly put forth a somewhat more "sexual" environment in the showers and sauna/steam rooms, at least, sometimes in the lockers. Seems over the top, but maybe it's "boys will be boys"? icon_rolleyes.gif

I am curious, though. What gym do you go to where they allow people to walk around completely naked? At my gym (24 Hour Fitness) they would probably call the cops if somebody was doing the Stairmaster, Squats, or Bench Press completely naked. Naked is only allowed in the locker room at my gym.

Who do you have blocked, if you don't mind me asking icon_cool.gif You know what I meant...the locker room, not the gym icon_wink.gif

Here on RJ, I have about 50 people on "Block and Ignore". On the Google Hangout, I only have one (1) person blocked. The names are not important. What's important is that they were irritating enough for me to say to myself, "My RJ experience would be much nicer if I didn't receive any communication or have to see any communication from that person/profile."

    And it works.

Shower curtains? there aren't any at the 24 Hour Fitness locations I use?

Naked is another thing all together though - sometimes I'll come into the gym wearing a t-shirt and just get out of my kilt or trousers and hop into my gym shorts, but if I'm coming from work I strip, and fold what I'm wearing as I put it in the locker, then put on my gym clothes.

Since I sauna after workout I'll wear my shorts into the shower, strip there and rinse them out, shower, dry off, wrap my towel around my waist and take my sopping wet shorts to the suit spinner, the towel being wrapped around my waist serves two purposes: if it doesn't wrap around, then I go on a juice fast until it does. and two, it gives me a free hand to carry my shorts and work the suit spinner.

But then again, in front of the locker I'm all naked and not giving a shit. Maybe it's because of the incredibly cramped quarters i've had on U.S. Navy Ships, it just doesn't bother me.

Yesterday a guy had a hard on in the shower and his curtain was partly open. I got excited but within a minute he shot in his shower and then left. I noticed him in the locker room leaving. When I looked for him in the lobby, he was meeting his wife and picking up his daughter at the nursery. So even straight guys have this figured out.

    Ugh! icon_rolleyes.gif

I would go with the Old men & Young men above poster.

I've seen more free shows of aged/old Buns and Bananas in the locker rooms. icon_cry.gif

& Youngsters are all savvy with towels and Mid-age men are all noble and behaved.

Probably the place, culture like some of you guys said

Reading comments here give me a better understanding of why people are hesitant to let Michael Sam into their locker room.

Cuz they are sorry ass pervs who think they have a right to use locker rooms and gym saunas to park their fat pathetic asses all day and stair at young guys. No wonder young guys are uncomfortable in locker rooms.

This behaviour justifies those who want to ban gays from locker rooms and sports.

I stopped going to the YMCAs near me because they attracted that kind of vermin.

100% OF THE TIME, THESE GUYS are not openly gay. This is classic behavior of CLOSET CASES.

strongbull saidYoung guys are much more self conscious now. Military service cures you of that I think, cause there's is no privacy. But also when we were young no one cared, guys were not objectified. Nudity is not sex, it's just natural. There was no issue at all, it's not like "I like to be nude so I can show off". We would not assume anyone was even looking at us like that. If you saw a guy showering with shorts on you would have teased him for being a sissy. To be all shy and self-concious was feminine. Now in the U.S. it is just laughable how hung up guys are. In Europe not so much. It has nothing to do with being gay or bath houses. LOL. How did we come to this? Young guys send nude selfies out into internet land, but they can't be nude in the locker room? Just bizarre to me how this changed so much in a few years. I think it is part of the feminization of men in the last few decades.

How would you know? Did you ask them? The ones I've encountered sure seem gay to me. And I even saw one mingling at an all male gay party once. The guy was in the sauna at the Y every day checking out teenage boys, but I never once saw him on the gym floor doing fitness.

Suit spinner? I've never heard of one, but I suppose it's like a miniature version of the spinning extractors that some laundromats have. One YMCA used to have a crank-operated wringer, somewhat like the wringers that olde Maytag manual washing machines had.

A suite spinner sounds like a good idea.

The culture of locker rooms and gyms has been changing a lot over the last 40 years. When I first went to UW-Madison in 1975, there was an all male swim class that was mandatory; everyone swam in the nude. I managed not to register for that class. That was the last year for that class, swimming was still mandatory, but I took a co-ed class with a female instructor who was very reassuring and I learned how to swim.

When I was in high school and junior high, the gym instructors thought it was part of their job to make sure that guys took showers in the nude in front of one another. There were no curtains, there were metal poles with spigots around which three or four guys would shower facing each other in an open shower room. One guy who was very much picked on for being effeminate was the target of not only students, but instructors. The gym teacher threw him in the shower naked and he stood cowering. It was some kind of torture that gym teachers could justify under the rubric of making a man out of someone.

I used to see the kind of thing the OP complains about--men lurking to see other guys nude. I don't see that anymore at the gyms I go to (LA Fitness in St Louis Park or South Minneapolis). There is much less social banter (which I miss), but guys mostly go about their business, shower, towel off and go. There are plenty of gay men in these gyms, but not much cruising. I rarely see cruising anywhere in Minnesota anymore. I think it has gone extinct with the advent of the internet and police raids on cruising venues. I don't mind the change. I would like to see more places where gay men would actually be social. It's hard to find friends who are more than casual acquaintances on Facebook.

Apparently there is a questions as to whether or not I am in fact a real person:

Unfortunately I am not the very beautiful David Morin... but I will cherish the compliment.

I am very much me, although David and I have worked with the same photographer and swim suit line.

I think he did a much better job.

    Generalize much?

Jake09, I've two bits of advice for you:
    1) get over yourself
    2) stop confusing gyms/fitness clubs with bath houses

This happens at every gym. I don't understand the point. Ok, youre gay, what is the damn point of hanging out in the locker room naked or following someone around? For shit sakes, if youre interested just start a damn conversation.

By hanging round naked you are achieving the opposite of what you want. The young guys you are trying to show off too are going to find you repulsive and creepy.

Go to the lockerroom, change out and leave. Why hangout like its a new social club?
