Ab Fab was totally off the hook. The best piss-yourself-laughing UK comedy of all time.

I have every DVD of the series, and have watched them many, many times over.

One thing I like about UK comedy over US is that the Brits know when to gracefully retire a series. The original Queer As Folk from the UK is so superior to the US version because it lasted for three seasons and had a start, middle and end. The US version took the premise from the Brits and then proceeded to churn out endless seasons of Melrose Place with gays.

Ab Fab went to five seasons and a couple of specials. Jennifer Saunders was very reluctant to make series five, feeling there was nothing left to tell about the characters.

But back to the original question, I'd probably go with DW.

Neither. They both have laugh tracks which make them abhorrent TV viewing, IMO. Anything, and I truly mean anything, with a laugh track just sucks. I don't need people to tell me what's funny.

    Arrested Development--Tobias Funke speaks:

Curb Your Enthusiasm is also great.

My vote definitely goes to Golden Girls,( every Saturday at 10). The entire cast was eccentric.

Designing Women was another favourite of mine but really only watched it for Julia and Suzanne. I LOVED Julia's rants because I used to be like that and have thankfully mellowed. Suzanne was just so flippant, even about her morally conscious sister.

Those were my two favouites from the '80's. From the '70's I would have to pick Maude, All in the Family, Mary Tyler Moore, Jeffersons and Laverne and Shirley.

26mileman, I can picture you now at 5 or 6 years of age, noting that Mary Richards' new apartment in the high rise wasn't as fun as the big studio in Phyllis's upstairs.

Sorry but for the whole time they were on TV I've only seen about 2-3 episodes of Will & Grace, Friends and Seinfeld. I'm lost on TV after 2000.

Wait a minute, I did like Cybil Shepherd's show: Cybil

I'm a diehard DW fan, but the GGs were funny.

Golden Girls hands down...they were TV pioneers when it came to taboo subjects such as cross dressing, gay siblings, gay marriage, senior sex, and cheesecakes....They made all that fun!! Hat's off to those girls....! In fact, an episode just started...I'm out! Happy Holidays Guys - you are all awesome!

Never really got into either. My faves are some of the older classics — I Love Lucy, The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Honeymooners — and a few more recent ones: Frasier, Third Rock From the Sun, Fawlty Towers, Absolutely Fabulous.

And there's a lot to be said for the sublime, sometimes surreal silliness of The Beverly Hillbillies and the sublime, always surreal silliness of Green Acres.

Well, All in the Family had some of that stuff (though not all of it) back in the early 1970s.

    And then there was Soap.

As to the original question, I liked Designing Women over Golden Girls, mainly for Julia's reading of the woman in the episode about her supposed friend, finding out she was homophobic against her own son, but to date, hands down for me is Noah's Arc. I watch Will & Grace, never got into Friends and never, ever got the point or humor of Seinfeld. Love Ab Fab when I could catch it.

    GG first

    MTM was pretty good to.

    W & G also.

I keep hoping the might make a spin off with Jack & Karen as the main characters.

Absolutely, but 1st - we were comparing two specific shows and 2nd - a TV sitcom like "All in the Family" was designed to be controversial....I don't believe Golden Girls was.

Married With Children trumps both of those shows.

Well, I brought up those other shows because others RJers had been naming their favorite sitcoms.

But you're right. All in the Family was probably conceived as a show that would handle controversial subjects and Golden Girls probably wasn't.

I loved the Golden Girls since I was a kid and had no idea what being gay was.
As far as gay shows go though, I would love to see "Some Of My Best Friends" with Alec Mapa and Jason Bateman put on dvd. It looked hilarious.

    Golden Girls.

Because as a kid I was allowed to watch it.

Designing Women, couldn't watch because it was too "feminine".

I guess the fam was clueless to an extent icon_smile.gif.
