Just recently moved from Iceland to London and I have yet to join a gym. I'm usually bored with gyms unless I go with a friend. However, I dig classes (I did CrossFit for a really short period before relocating, loved it), running and swimming, so I'm not completely unfit, just... too average for my own taste, I suppose. Let's say I'm good with cardio workouts. But I'd like to put my head, time and energy into strengthening my core, arms, back, legs, etc.

I am interested in trying out wall climbing but I haven't been to one of those centers since I was in my early teens.

So my question for you London lads is (or wherever you're located, good advice is a good advice!): what gyms/centers do you recommend for wall-climbing beginners and what sort of preparation do you recommend I do before starting out?

Find a gym that has cross fit.

Try The Arch climbing wall in London Bridge. Good facilities and they'll give you an introductory session to show you the basics.
