All sorts of extremists were liberated by that attack and have spread internationally very quickly.
I think Amnesty International were warning of human rights abuses, including religiously/politically motivated, violent homophobia, in Iraq as early as 2007. But there was little reporting or concern here.
The same appears to be happening in Libya following a similar situation of the US/UK helping topple the Gaddafi regime.
