In Nebraska our winters don't get really nasty untill mid/late Feb... only to end a week or two into March.

Here, February is when the earliest wildflowers start blooming. They're little purple crocuses we call "grass widows." Right now, you can find a few if you look, but in a couple of weeks the hillside will be painted in purple. Typically, it freezes every night and warms to around 40 during the days. There are usually a few snow storms, but it doesn't stick around for more than a day or two.

But I live in the gorge where the Columbia punches through the Cascades. There are strong east-west and elevation gradients, so alternate climates are less than five miles in any direction. I can look out my office window and see the heavy rainstorms to the west, while the sun still shines here. My Saturday bike ride takes me from sagebrush steppe, through oak savannah, and into fir forests, and back in two hours or less.

It's been sleeting here for days. It's utterly vile, and it's been too hard to run in for the last two days. On the plus side, I'm gaining weight

Haha in Charlotte it snowed Tuesday night, was about 15 degrees last night, we're in the 30s today and it's supposed to be in the 60s by the weekend. Erratic erratic erratic.

Red_Vespa said How does Kansas get to be warmer than Florida in the winter? icon_confused.gif

The arctic air presses east, then south, side swiping us off to the east.
I've noticed this tends to happen more often in the late winter... in the early parts, the arctic air invades Kansas and runs right into the mountains as it expands.... you guys can have it this time!

With Florida, we probably aren't much warmer at this time and its damn rare.

It's been below zero where I'm at... but I could care less about that.

I hate the snow fall in Maine.. storms of 12-16 inches keep coming along. Snow banks are 8-10feet high in some places... snow removel piles are 20ft... Anyone have a really powerful blow-dryer?

It's currently about 8F in New Hampshire headed for about 0F tonight with a strong wind. We have at least another six weeks of harsh winter weather to look forward to. So far this winter we've a snow storm every week and that looks set to continue.

Columbus, OH....it was a rare day...we had SUNSHINE and it got upto 18 degrees from a morning low of -8 degrees. February is usually pretty cold and snowy and makes "cabin fever" a serious issue. We may get a slight warming over the next few days, into the 40's and most likely some rain.....the begining of our 5th season...MUD! icon_eek.gif
