Any dog lovers on RJ? I'd guess there aren't too many in China - except those who like the taste of freshly tortured dog:

To people from India we're hardly any better with our eating beef. And to vegetarians we're no better eating any animals. And we do horrific experiments on animals, for medical research and also to test the safety of things like cleaning products, cosmetics, etc.

Lumpy, by "people from India" I presume you mean the Hindus, who comprise 80% - but not all - of the population. The country is 14% Muslim, who are fine with eating beef, and who are very aggressively discriminated against by the Hindus (not just for their dinner menu). Sikhs don't prohibit the eating of any kind of meat but consider it better to be vegetarian. By and large, it's much better to be a cow in India than a Muslim, a Sikh, a woman, or - God forbid - an "untouchable".

The point, however, is this: I grew up in a farming community, and I never saw cows, pigs, or chickens stuffed into a wire cage on their way to be slaughtered like those poor dogs are. The photo would be disgusting no matter what kind of animal were being mistreated in that way. It is all the more disgusting because it's dogs.

No other animal is as willing or as trusting a companion of man as the domesticated dog. This is why torturing, killing, and eating dogs is repulsive to the vast majority of Western cultures. I'd think anyone with a normal level of humanity and compassion shouldn't have to have this explained to them - or did you already understand and were simply being argumentative?

STFU, you moron. Read the article and do some research. It's reported that some of these dogs were photographed wearing collars which suggests these dogs were someone's pets and were stolen. These dogs are also skinned a live and are not killed "humanely" as many of the Chinese are trying to make us believe. This festival isn't even a Chinese tradition. It's only been in circulation since 2009.

Yes, being argumentative. There's a lot of inhumane treatment of animals going on in the world, and China isn't the only place where it's happening. It's easy to whip people into a frenzy when you show them dogs. We prefer to conveniently forget what we're doing to animals here in the US and the west. Visit the peta.org site.

China is one screwed up and disgusting place. Does anyone remember the dying rooms for abandoned baby girls? No one seems to talk about it anymore but that was a big deal for a while. Now they have this summer solstice slaughter festival to kill dogs. I never had and never will have any interest in China or Chinese culture.

Here's another tidbit of info to demonstrate the Chinese's evolved practices. icon_rolleyes.gif As recently as 2006:

"In 2006, 50,000 dogs were beaten to death during a five day crackdown in Yunnan after three people died of rabies. Only 3% of China’s dogs are vaccinated against rabies, and 2000 people die because of it every year. During the Yunnan crackdown, authorities halted people who were walking their dog. The dogs were beaten to death on the spot (NBCN 2006)."

Can you imagine walking your dog and the authorities popping up to bludgeon your pet dog to death in public? icon_rolleyes.gif

And what are you doing about any of the mistreatment of animals in the US? Anything? Or do you simply enjoy playing devil's advocate for its own sake? How's the paleo diet going, by the way?

NOLAman1977 saidIt's why I only order shrimp dishes in Chinese restaurants. You can't fake a shrimp.

I dunno. I read once that almost all of the crab meat we get in the grocery store is just whitefish with the characteristic crab pink markings applied with food dye. But at least it's still fish.

PLEASE stop posting photos like this! These people are savages and I would do anything in my power to stop this, but these photos literally give me nightmares.

I casually know someone from China and I told him I would like to visit one day, but he then told me I would be very upset with how they treat animals. He told me one day he was walking down the street with his family and there was a dog walking down the sidewalk in front of them. He said, suddenly, a man with a baseball bat came out of a doorway and beat the dog to death, threw him in a sack and threw it over his shoulder and walked away. I would literally kill someone if I saw that in person.

Last time around it was the Koreans who were eating dogs. Joey Skaggs is or was the master at creating fake situations and showing how the media doesn't do a good job investigating the story. This is my favorite one. I especially liked the part about the dogs barking in the background of the answering machine message.

I doubt anyone is still unaware of the prolonged abuse that cows, pigs and chickens suffer at the vast majority of the factory farms where most of our food comes from now. Even the soft Canadians to our north are clubbing 500,000 baby seals a year. There is zero reason to get on some moral high horse just because western society has a special relationship with one animal like India has with cows, or that some of our usual alt-righters need another target to channel their anger at.

This is so sick. Even sicker is the annual Dolphin Day hunt in Japan. A certain breed of Dolphin that frequents a certain area of Japanese seas, are rounded up by boats. Then hunted for sport.

My parents lived in Taipei, Taiwan in the 50s and had a dog of theirs, a golden retriever mix named "Sugar" disappear from their backyard. ..

If a person feels compelled to compare the practice of eating canines to that of eating cows, chickens, pigs, etc. in some poor attempt to diminish his own guilty about eating meat then that's his prerogative. But what can't be argued is that many of these dogs are stolen pets. At least, according to the many online articles I've come across on the net. And yes this appears to be real, unless bbc.com nbcnews.com and the many other reliable sites that cover this event are all lying which I hardly doubt.

If these animals are pets and belong to someone else that's completely wrong. It has also been observed that these dogs go days without food or water before they are slaughtered.

Here we go again with major hypocrisy. I mean, as someone living in Sweden, I think a lot of the rest of the world treat their animals like shit (even though there are exceptions). And we still have a long way to go.

So if they were breeding dogs to be eaten then it's ok.   icon_rolleyes.gif
Stealing is wrong regardless of what's being stolen.

^ Is this more Lumpy-Libtard-Logic that you're becoming known for in these threads? Just toss a sweeping generalization in some all inclusive manner without allowing for exceptions. Or that most would agree that stealing someone's bicycle or smartphone is not as painful or as traumatic to the owner as stealing someone's pet dog. Especially when you live in a country where dog theft typically equates to one's pet becoming someone's meal. Canines provide loyal companionship, protection from intruders, etc. There is a profound emotional exchange between two separate living breathing entities which, I'm guessing, given your lifestyle choices you've been out of touch with for a very long time and therefore can't relate one iota.

And yes, it's true that in other parts of the world people consume animals like you have mentioned earlier. But I'm guessing you never heard of this festival before. Looks like no one here has. Add to that the fact that your knee-jerk response was to completely dismiss all if it as unimportant, suggest it was "fake news", imply that people who care are hypocrites all demonstrate your lack of empathy. Even for those of us that recognize faults within our own culture, pets being ripped from their families, denied food and water for days, neglected and tortured and more than likely skinned alive all warrant some type of condemnation, not apathetic dismissal.

This thread amuses me. Are RJ's trailer trash so desperate to find some other culture to put down?

The thread title had nothing to do with pet theft. It started out as "savages!" "it's so disgusting!" "makes me physically ill!" "they're companion animals!"

Then it's "they're skinned ALIVE! i read that somewhere!" Just consider for a second the inefficiency of that.

As far as animal welfare goes, USA is closer to China than to the UK or any western European country. EVEN India, Malaysia and Poland are better

I guess this thread is now about China's pet theft problem? So scandalous lol. Just like America's murder problem - over twice Canada's murder rate, and 4x China's murder rate icon_rolleyes.gif
