The Palm Springs City Council in a special meeting Tuesday directed City Manager David Ready to order the closure of every nonessential business. The emergency order is expected to become active at 7 a.m. on Wednesday after he and the city attorney write itTuesday afternoon.

Councilmembers also unanimously agreed to direct Ready to issue a shelter-in-place order.

The order mirrors action taken earlier this week in the Bay Area, which allows 21 types of essential businesses to remain open. Restaurants will no longer be able to serve dine-in customers, although takeout and delivery can continue.

Businesses that are allowed to remain open need to institute a 6-foot buffer distance between people indoors. The emergency orders will need to be ratified on Thursday in the regularly scheduled city council meeting.

The council also requested that all residents avoid nonessential contact.

These steps were taken to increase social distancing and slow the spread of the coronavirus, which has already infected nearly 200,000 people worldwide, according to a presentation given to the council by Assistant City Manager Marcus Fuller.

Mayor Geoff Kors said law enforcement will not be arresting business owners for staying open at this time, instead allowing several days for the police to go into the community to educate them on the action.

Ready was instructed to make the order effective until April 2. At a meeting on that day, the city council will review the situation and extend the order as necessary.

Mayor Pro Tem Christy Holstege also asked staff to look into what funds and other economic actions, such as tax relief, the city can offer local businesses and residents as the local economy stalls. The council will ask the Coachella Valley Association of Governments if it could organize nearby cities to take similar measures

Without social isolation rules, 4,000 in Coachella Valley will die, doctor says
    https://www.desertsun.com/story/news/health/2020/03/17/coronavirus-update-without-social-isolation-rules-4-000-coachella-valley-die-doctor-says/5071586002/

A doctor treating patients in the coronavirus unit at Eisenhower Health has called for a lockdown of the entire Coachella Valley to slow the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, which he called a "once in 500 years event."

His comments came the same day that the Palm Springs City Council directed City Manager David Ready to order residents to shelter-in-place, and the closure of nonessential businesses, beginning Wednesday at 7 a.m. and lasting through April 2.

Addressing the Riverside County Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday morning, Dr. Rick Loftus, a virologist and HIV researcher, also said it is critical that people adhere to county Public Health Officer Dr. Cameron Kaiser's order prohibiting gatherings of more than 10 people and that there be at least six feet between those people who are in a group.

“Over the next 12 to 18 months, if a proactive social isolation with proactive lockdown conditions... are not implemented, I estimated that 4,000 people age 50 or above will die in my valley and 11,000 of them will require ICU-level care," Loftus said.

Additionally, he estimated that 200 people under age 40 could die, if the county's 10-person rule is not followed.

We have a number of friends in Palm Springs, including 2 who are owners of gay clubs, who are dealing with this. One of them also has a second club right here. Who’s allegedly declared (though we haven’t heard that ourselves from him) that if his club here were to close (which it now has) he’ll close it permanently and not reopen. One of the most popular & successful places in Wilton Manors.

Other local owners we know are struggling with this. Some places have food service, and may be able to use an exemption for restaurants having take-out or outside seating (which most here in WM do). Then they can also serve alcohol from the bar, but only when food is purchased with it. A formula the local politicians have concocted that may not last long. Especially if the State or Federal governments impose greater restrictions.

Today’s the first day it’ll be tried, so we’re gonna see how it works in practice. But if we don’t like it, think it involves too much risky exposure for us, we’ll just stay home until we see what happens next. We like our socializing, but just staying alive takes first priority.

Sadly, this catastrophic EVENT that has kicked our economy in the balls affecting ALL Americans seemingly overnight will likely be one of those "Survival of the Fittest" moments where whole businesses are simply lost because they were caught by surprise with their pants down and unable to survive this kind of hit

Echoing the latest lame Trump spin. That “everyone was blindsided” in Trump’s words. Ah, no... everyone wasn’t, only you, Donald.

The rest of the world clearly saw this coming, as well as those entrusted with our US health care system. ONLY Trump didn’t, and lied and misrepresented facts to make himself look good, and because of his incredible ignorance.

To hell with the welfare of US citizens. Trump first - everyone else second. His public statements have mostly been to say: “What a good boy am I!” Awarding himself a 10-out-of-10. icon_rolleyes.gif

And now we have the consequence. We could have been better prepared a lot sooner, and suffered less. And how does he want to solve this now? Put $1000 in our pockets. Almost like a bribe to vote for him.

But it’s OUR borrowed money, placed on OUR national debt. Money from my right pocket to my left. Paid back with interest. How about trying harder to make sure I don’t get sick in the first place, and don't even die from this, along with my husband and our families & friends? I’d rather have that assurance than $1000.

That is your opinion only. But you are probably a Chinese Communist Party sympathizer and it's more fun for you to blame Trump.

Art, is your hatred of this President so complete that even in a crisis you go on attack mode? Like you I am old enough to have lived through several Presidents. Some better than others. For the time being let's just keep it positive, help your fellow man, do what we can do. Plenty of time in the next 4 and a half years to criticize President Trump. You put up Hillary and now Biden. Your party. I'm independent. Trump is as much the fault of Democrats who had an opportunity to put forward a gay man, several Black men, a few women and some of color. But the Democratic voters choose an older white male who has lived the life of a Washington insider. Don't blame Trump voters

I'd love to talk about this with Debbie Wasserman Schultz, our Member of Congress (aka The Target), whom I expect to meet later this month at a fundraising dinner, where the featured guest will be Hillary Clinton. Gotta give those Repubs credit for getting nuttier every day:

Art it is not a fake claim, she was removed from the DNC for a legitimate reason. The DNC is at it again and the naive older voters 40 and over are showing their blatant stupidity by voting for a doddering senile fool from Delaware who is a “republican lite” corporatist who is against anything that benefits we the American people. They are also dead wrong for thinking that Biden is more electable and can beat the Mango Mussolini. They are in for a real emotional shock in November when this could end up being Nixon vs. McGovern 1972 chapter two where Biden wins only Delaware his home state and Trump will win all other 49 states and even flip the liberal District of Columbia to republican red. We had excellent candidates with both Bernie Sanders and Tulsi Gabbard yet the stupid fools born before January 1, 1981 are voting for the highly corrupt, pathologically lying Joe Biden who has rapidly declining cognitive abilities.

I voted for Bernie yesterday in the Illinois primary, as I had done in 2016. Unfortunately he lost again.
It seems really strange that Bernie had an incredible start with the first primaries, and then just suddenly
started failing. The DNC has obviously appointed the 2020 nominee.

The Democrat Party is so utterly crooked. They have stolen it from Bernie again...not that I really mind...Would never want him anywhere near the Oval Office

Malfeasance means misconduct or wrongdoing, especially by a public official.

    Below is malfeasance:

The chair of the Democratic National Committee, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, has announced her resignation on the eve of the party’s convention, dealing a blow to hopes of demonstrating unity in the face of the threat from Donald Trump.
Schultz said she would step down after the convention. She has been forced to step aside after a leak of internal DNC emails showed officials actively favouring Hillary Clinton during the presidential primary and plotting against Clinton’s rival, Bernie Sanders.

Of course then there's the Pakistani IT scandal that she was involved with...

She's either a cooperating witness or on suicide watch.. or both. She is at the center of every current major investigation. Every text, email, or even spoken conversation has been recorded since the 2016 scandal.
I'll give you credit for calling out the sheriff though, despite acquaintance. Next few months you will both be disgusted by what has been going on below your radar. I try not to blame you for willfully covering it up, but you are starting to sound like some of the compromised individuals who are reading from a script under pressure.

Thanks for the back up, guys. I didn't think the Debbie malfeasance was even a question anymore. I appreciate Art Deco has a personal relationship with her and supports her like a good loyal friend should do. I know personally and romantically some slippery Republican politicians and operatives. Some Democrats, too. I'm old school and you don't turn on people. But, telling me to stfu when I just stated what everyone knows is common knowledge and has been widely reported in all media is a perfect example of Nixonian blind loyalty.

Like I said previously, Democrats put Trump in office and are now poised to keep him in office. I voted for Mayor Pete same as I voted for Obama for the sole reason that although both were not qualified the message sent that change was needed and another old white man VS old white man was hardly progressive. Trump will be Republican candidate but Dems failed to support what they say the support. Diversity. I'm independent.

Hard for me, or you, to STFU ( I don't swear or even indicate not my style), but let's have a real time debate. I will be here a few hours we can have a back and forth Lincoln Douglas debate of ideas. Instead of potshotting each other from the cover of a laptop. I await your response, my old friend

Please name the "major investigations" at which Wasserman-Schultz is the center. Regarding my “personal relationship” with her you claim I have, it’s a political & social acquaintance. Lessened now since our last Congressional redistricting that put her in another district, so that she no longer represents us.

As for the sheriff who got removed after the Parkland massacre, we never liked him. He defeated the previous sheriff, whom we did know and like, on a first-name basis. While the current sheriff was slam-dunked onto our county by the Republican governor, and we’ve never met him. Nor will we, wearing his unprecedented 5th gold star of rank he promptly awarded himself after becoming the governor’s lackey.

His removed predecessor is running against him for his old office as sheriff again, strongly supported by a friend of ours who’s a prominent gay political figure in South Florida. Frankly we may not vote for either of them.

So please don’t make baseless assumptions about me. Nor make serious charges against others, without providing the evidence I’ve asked you twice to produce. And please, no lunatic far-right disinformation outlets as your proof.
