Injectable Long-Acting PrEP Shown to Be 69 Percent More Effective at Averting HIV Infection Than Truvada

"A new injectable form of PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) from ViiV Healthcare administered every two months has been shown to be 69 percent more effective at averting HIV infection than Gilead’s widely-used oral antiretroviral drug Truvada, according to its manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline."

From what I have been told by my doc, a San Francisco gay doc, Truvada and its new reformulation Descovy is essentially 100 effective. The short article attached here doesn't actually mention the medication failure rate of either but focuses on the failure of the guy to actually take a daily pill. Kinda misleading and sad, too.

Yeah this was mentioned in the article I read about the study, but at the end of the day the effect is still the same. Some people just miss their daily pills and lose protection and end up contracting HIV, and this risk is significantly lower with an injection that lasts for a couple weeks (as long as the injected PrEP is as effective as the daily pill). Hope to see further positive news about these trials.

Descovy is supposed to be an improvement but there is a reason why the pharmaceutical company put it under a new name. The patent for Truvada ends this year in the USA. They created a new name to keep their profit margins high.
