Donald Trump's weak and flailing interview with Jonathan Swan of Axios fired a warning flare about the President's hopes for reelection, if his campaign and White House staff programed to fulfill his yearning for praise are prepared to recognize it.

Trump came across as ill-prepared, narcissistic and far from in control of the coronavirus pandemic. It was a far cry from the image of courageous leadership and energetic, unstinting commitment on behalf of Americans that his aides spend every day trying to sketch.

It is hard to remember an interview in which a sitting President was more unsparingly exposed or seemed so unequal to the magnitude of a crisis that is threatening the American people and is nowhere near ending.

When Trump was fact-checked in real time, Trump's flame-throwing interview technique fizzled. When Swan frustrated his scattershot attempts to jump to another subject, Trump wilted. Under pressure, he provided the kind of offhand remark that could define a political race if properly used by an opponent.

"It is what it is," Trump said, appearing callous and disconnected about a Covid-19 death toll that has reached 150,000 Americans. When he was challenged, Trump responded with nonsensical answers, grasping for a counter to simple questions about his handling of the pandemic.

"We're lower than the world," Trump said in an incomprehensible response when pressed on why the US has a death toll that averaged 1,000 a day in recent weeks and is expected to go ever higher. When he made the unfounded claim that there are "those" who say there can be too much coronavirus testing, Trump bizarrely claimed "books" and "manuals" said so.

The interview was unrecognizable from the friendly, unchallenging conversations he enjoys with Fox News opinion hosts and other conservative media figures, who play into the President's craving for adulation that is also often provided by subordinates like Vice President Mike Pence.

It's interesting how each faction sees what they want to see.

The right sees Trump responding effectively against a smarmy reporter who's pitching a series of "gotcha" questions.

The left (that's you, A_D), see him as evasive, unaware of the facts, and ineffective in a true back-and-forth discussion.

I don't think the interview will move opinion much one way or the other. Those who are paying attention to political debate right now are pretty much locked into their opinions. Trump's supporters will support him, no matter what verbal gaffes he makes. He could cure cancer, AIDS, and COVID all on the same day, and the left would still hate him.

The left sees 2+2 and sees 4
    The right sees 5

    It's all the same!

The Right’s definition of “smarmy”: Anyone who doesn’t pander to Trump and make him look wonderful.

Definition of “gotcha” questions: Any question Trump can’t answer, especially asking for the sources of his ridiculous & outrageous claims. “We’re lower than the world.” Yeah, but ironically not in any good way that Trump likely meant.

The Right’s definition of good questions: Softballs to Trump by Fox and other friendly conservative media, accepted at face value, without critical follow-up questions. In some cases the question outline indicated to WH aides before the so-called interview.

Trump wilts when facing a real interviewer. Just like he did with Chris Wallace. Who, being with Fox News, was still not that tough & probing as some others might have been.

Or maybe Chris Wallace is also smarmy? Since reviews of Trump’s performance in that interview were unflattering, too.

It's Rose coloured Glasses, do cause blindness. They block out truths and reality Bob doesn't like. Thus he's failed to see "homophobic Democrates, and voted for them.
I mean even a blind gay could see how homophobic Obama and Hillary are.
But then, nor does he see his own brand of, Gay Bashing minorities here.
They cut out all the ugliness in Bob's life.

This interview was a whole disaster.
"But they also kill white people" is not a response to systemic racism and police violence.
"It is what it is" is not a response to "1000 Americans a day die of Covid19".
Deaths per case is absolutely not more important than deaths per capita.

Yes Americans who appear to be African, killing other Americans who also of African appearance, is a major concern in America.

Jonathan Swan is brilliant. He showed what a pathetic moron Trump really is ....... especially when the Impeached Piece of Shit attempted to justify the
number of deaths in the US due to the TrumpVirus.

Obama ended Dont’ Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT). He also bathed the White House in rainbow lights when the US Surpreme Court legalized gay marriages. Has Trump done that?

In fact, what HAS Trump done for gays? He’s limited access to health care for us, pushed laws & court rulings that health care providers can deny us care based on their religious beliefs. He's refused to acknowledge June as Gay Pride Month, as his predecessors did.

And Trump is our gay friend exactly HOW?

But when was the last time A_D ran a nation, or even a Platoon, under fire in action? He's nothing more that a shot stout, repugnant man, with a Napoleon Complex.

Jonathan Swan is the meme hero we need right now

Jonathan Swan’s agile interview with Donald Trump for Axios on HBO was revelatory.

The 40-minute conversation exposed the impeached president’s dismissiveness of pandemic-related deaths, his unwillingness to praise critics like the late John Lewis and his remarkable lack of concern over Russia’s reported aid to Taliban soldiers. But for the internet, the biggest takeaway was Swan’s face. A meme has been born.

In the interview, Swan’s boyish visage alternated between bemusement, amusement and abject confusion over the president’s claims of success and unfair treatment by the media. One stand-out expression that exploded on Twitter came after Trump handed Swan graphs showing that the United States was “lower than the world” in terms of death in proportion to cases of coronavirus.

Swan, who insisted he was referring to the U.S.’s record of deaths proportional to population, was told he “can’t do that” by the incompetent president. Swan furrowed his brow; his mask of utter befuddlement perfectly encapsulated many viewers’ reactions to the interview and, in a macro sense, the world of 2020 writ large.

The image below is of Jonathan Swan from his interview with the president staring confusedly at a piece of paper. The meme captions read:

Consider it source the OP is using -- CNN -- 'Nuff said.

The interview was fine. Trump is who he is. The media will never learn.
