A short history of Kamala Harris’ support for the LGBTQ+ community

    Kamala-Harris-590x370.png
Harris has publicly backed several strong moments that have benefited the community. From her decision to not support the constitutional ban on same-sex marriage in 2008. After marriage equality was restored to California in 2013, Harris officiated the first marriage as a bold statement.

Standing as a senator, Harris also introduced legislation to ensure and protect LGBTQ+ Americans from discrimination. In 2018, she introduced the Do No Harm Act to prevent the use of religious beliefs to be used as a means to discriminate against the community.

Harris has often been vocal against Trump, condemning the impeached Piece of Shit's removal of LGBTQ+ health-related information across federal websites. The senator later announced her support for the Equality Act, and soon vocalised her support for allowing transgender people to have equal access to public restrooms.

She and 19 senators signed a letter to The impeached Piece of Shit Donald Trump condemning the administration’s removal of LGBTQ+ health-related information from federal websites, and announced her support for the Equality Act and for allowing transgender people equal access public accommodations, including to restrooms that match their gender identity.

Trump administration erases LGBTQ people from foreign aid policy

    mike-pence-donald-trump-coronavirus.jpg?

Trump appointees complained about "anti-Christian bias" at USAID. Now this policy erases LGBTQ people.

The Trump administration has once again been caught removing references to LGBTQ people from official government documents.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) released a draft text for a revised version of their Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Policy, removing several references to LGBTQ people that were included in the previous version from 2012.

Trump administration sued for possible attempt to write LGBTQ people out of human rights law

USAID is the federal agency that manages over $27 billion in foreign aid and development assistance – more than half of the foreign aid the U.S. gives each year with missions in over 100 countries.

The 2012 version of the policy on gender equality discussed LGBTQ people at several points. For example, it previously defined gender-based violence as “violence directed at an individual based on his or her biological sex, gender identity, or perceived adherence to socially defined norms of masculinity or femininity,” and a footnote expanded on this to specifically name anti-LGBTQ violence as a form of gender-based violence that concerns USAID.

The 2012 document also has a list of types of organizations that USAID should be partnering with in its missions and it includes “lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender advocates.”

Neither of those references appears in the 2020 policy.

The 2012 policy uses the expression “gender identity” several times and, in a footnote, explains that the policy is concerned with gender identity as “an individual’s internal, personal sense of being male or female” and not just sex “based on a combination of bodily characteristics including: chromosomes, hormones, internal reproductive organs and genitalia.”

“For transgender people, their birth-assigned sex and their own internal sense of gender identity do not match,” the 2012 policy explains.

The 2020 policy does not use the phrase “gender identity” at all.

The 2012 policy lists several factors that can further marginalize people, and it includes sexual orientation, gender identity, HIV status, as well as ethnicity, disability, and lack of income. The 2020 policy only mentions “those who face discrimination” without expanding on who, exactly, could face discrimination.

ProPublica reports that the changes led to an exchange of emails between various USAID officials.

Timothy Meisburger, USAID’s director of the Center of Excellence on Democracy, Human Rights, and Governance, wrote that staff should “keep in mind that the policies of the current Administration may differ from those of previous Administrations, and that it is our duty as civil servants to faithfully execute the policy of the current Administration.”

Meisburger was appointed to USAID in 2017 by Donald Trump.

“It sends a message when an overarching umbrella policy that is supposed to inform all of USAID’s practices and initiatives is missing those factors,” Gayatri Patel said. Patel is the director of gender advocacy at the organization CARE.

ProPublica also noted that the 2020 policy removed several references to contraception that were included in the 2012 version. The 2020 policy says that “improving healthy timing and spacing of pregnancies” is a health goal and only mentions “fertility awareness” as a way of achieving that goal.

In June, Trump appointed far-right activist and Merritt Corrigan to USAID. Within two months at the agency, she had a meltdown on Twitter, complaining that she was faced with “anti-Christian bias” at USAID “Gay marriage isn’t marriage. Men aren’t women. US-funded Tunisian LGBT soap operas aren’t America First.”

“The United States is losing ground in the battle to garner influence through humanitarian aid because we now refuse to help countries who don’t celebrate sexual deviancy,” she tweeted.

She was fired soon after sending those tweets.

Republicans care. Enough to be on a continuous anti-LGBT crusade. And their allies, the Evangelicals, preach homophobia from their pulpits. The ones who claim it’s not a big deal are the ones who don’t want gays to notice what’s being done to them.

Donald Trump seriously thinks he’s the ‘most pro-gay president in American history’. He’s launched 168 attacks against the LGBT+ community

Far from being “pro-gay”, Donald Trump and his administration have relentlessly attacked the LGBT+ community.

GLAAD’s Trump Accountability Project has recorded 168 attacks on the LGBT+ community in the 1308 days Donald Trump has been in office, averaging out at slightly less than one regressive action every week.

The Trump administration has banned transgender people from serving in the military, actively supported discrimination against LGBT+ people in employment, services and healthcare and erased LGBT+ resources, data and language from government websites.

In June, Trump’s Republican Party announced that it would be leaving its 2016 party platform unchanged, meaning that the GOP will continue to officially support the reversal of marriage equality.

On June 12, 2020, the fourth anniversary of the Pulse massacre, the Trump administration cruelly erased precious healthcare protections for trans patients, although luckily the rollback was temporarily blocked by a federal judge this week.

The White House also failed to officially recognise Pride Month for yet again in 2020, in stark contrast to the Obama administration

When most people think of Donald Trump, the words “pro” and “gay” typically do not ever enter their minds. Unless you are a Log Cabin Republican, then, evidently, he’s the most pro-gay president in the history of all presidents who ever existed!

A weird new video by the self-hating gay conservative group featuring none other than out former U.S. ambassador to Germany/Trump surrogate twitter troll Richard Grenell claims Trump is “the most pro-gay president in American history.”

The video, set to patriot-sounding, royalty-free music, makes all sorts of patently false claims, including that Trump is the “strongest ally that gay Americans have ever had in the White House,” that he spearheaded some non-existent global initiative to decriminalize homosexuality planetwide, and that he was the first president in history to be “pro-gay marriage from his first day in office.”

In reality, Trump has spent the past three and a half years chipping away at LGBTQ equality and appointing antigay judges, he’s embraced some of the most homophobic leaders in the world, including Vladimir Putin and Jair Bolsonaro, and he spoke out against same-sex marriage while on the campaign trail in 2016.

Oh, and let’s also not forget that he picked one of nation’s most homophobic governors to be his Vice President.

But sure! Donald Trump is the most pro-gay president America has ever seen! …So long as you don’t look at his record, his tweets, his allies, or listen to anything he’s ever said about LGBTQ people.

I would rather take GLAAD’s word, or the HRC, over those of Trump, his Admin and his mindless followers on any issue, but especially gay rights. And based on what I witness with official Trump policy, not his own phony, delusional claims of great accomplishments that never happened, often weren’t even attempted. And to hear the Trump trolls here stating Trump has the best LGBTQ record of any president is sickening for the lie itself, and for the damage to people that it hides.

You may Disagree With Biden a Lot. But He’s Not a Cruel Bigot. And Right Now, That’s Enough.

    200814-dean-biden-tease_xd8nhi

I’m not wild about Biden on Israel or Harris on criminal justice. But “not wild about” is one thing. Threatened to my very being is quite another.

Before 9/11, I was white—meaning, among other things, that I had the privilege of sitting out a presidential election to wait for the “perfect” candidate who fulfilled my demands for progressive purity.

But being Muslim and of Arab heritage, my world changed in the years after 9/11 as I was transformed by society from white to a minority. Consequently, I learned firsthand the pain of being defined by the worst in my community and having politicians then openly use that grotesque caricature to demonize us. And no one has been more vile on this front than Donald Trump, who made ginning up hatred of Muslims one of the centerpieces of his 2016 campaign, which resulted in more hate crimes in 2017 against my community than even in the year after 9/11.

In normal times, perhaps I’d be yelling about the fact that of nearly 40 speakers the DNC has chosen so far for next week’s convention, that besides Bernie Sanders, Liz Warren, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the rest are for the most part moderate/establishment Democrats (except for the two who aren’t even Democrats). The DNC could have done far better on this front and included more progressive voices and at least one Muslim American progressive such as Rep. Ilhan Omar.

But when the guy in the White House has called to ban my entire faith, inspired hate crimes against my community and made the lives of fellow minorities a living hell, these things don’t matter as much. And that’s the same sentiment many in other minority groups have shared as Trump has come for each of us at one time or another. When people of color call my SiriusXM radio show, I can assure you that none are talking the DNC line-up of speakers, but nightly they share how Trump has caused them real pain. This is not political, it’s personal with Trump, as we are fighting to survive.

Now though to the reality of 2020: Will other progressives who have the privilege of waiting for progressive purity sit this election out because in their view supporting the Joe Biden/Kamala Harris ticket makes them a “sell-out to Wall Street” or any of the other reasons heard in 2016 why some wouldn’t support Hillary Clinton? In a word: Yes. Since Tuesday I’ve seen rumblings of that on social media from friends. In fact, I was already called a “sell-out” in a posting on Facebook by a fellow progressive for my full-throated embrace of Biden/Harris. Other progressives have expressed deep concerns about the ticket's failure to embrace “structural change” like Medicare for All and on criminal justice.

But so far at least, it appears there are far fewer demands for purity than what I saw in 2016. Part of the reason, obviously, is Trump’s toxic record in the White House. However, more than that, it could be that Biden has been working with Bernie Sanders’ team over the last few months, which has resulted in Biden embracing more progressive positions on certain issues such as climate and education. In contrast, after the 2016 primary, the Clinton and Sanders camps did not team up like this on policy.

Secondly, Harris is actually very progressive on core issues, receiving an 80 percent rating for her Senate voting record in 2019 from the liberal group Americans for Democratic Action, while Liz Warren trailed her at a 75 percent rating. Yet there’s no denying that while Sanders and Warren sought a wealth tax and railed against Wall Street, Harris has been supported by Wall Street interests.

Beyond criminal justice concerns raised about Biden/Harris, there’s also the issue of Palestine-Israel. Progressives—and not just Muslims or those of Arab heritage—have been very critical of Biden and Harris for their staunch support of Israel. Because I am of Palestinian heritage and have family in the West Bank, U.S policy in regard to the region is also personal for me.

“So far at least, it appears there are far fewer demands for purity than what I saw in 2016. ”
Sanders was beloved by pro-Palestinian activists for his championing of Palestinian human rights and his unabashed criticism of Benjamin Netanyahu’s policies. Biden is not Bernie. But Biden is still 100 percent better than Trump on this issue. For example, Biden has already publicly pledged to reverse Trump’s heartless decision in 2018 to end funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA.) This alone will have a real impact on the lives of hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees who look to this agency daily for food, education, health care and more.

Biden has also recently announced that while he opposes the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, he defends the rights of Americans to engage in it and will oppose state action designed to penalize Americans who are active in BDS. (That’s a small but meaningful change from the 2016 Democratic platform.)

To those whose privilege—whatever that may be, from race to wealth—allows them to wait for perfection, this is the year the rest of us need your help. As a progressive, I know you’re moved by empathy and compassion. That’s what defines us. In that vein, join us in ending the reign of Trump’s cruelty, bigotry, racism and sexism. Trump has caused real pain to countless minority communities with his hate and discriminatory policies from banning transgender Americans from the military to smearing Black Lives Matter as a “symbol of hate” while denying systemic racism exists, to putting children in cages and ending DACA, to his Muslim ban that has separated families. The list goes on and on.

Activist Linda Sarsour summed it up well Tuesday after Harris was announced as Biden’s running mate. Sarsour, who was a visible part of Bernie Sanders’ 2016 and 2020 campaigns, tweeted, “It’s no secret that I have disagreements with both VP Joe Biden & Senator Kamala Harris. But I know what I need to do—Elect the Biden-Harris ticket.” She then added a line that is vitally important for Biden and Harris to understand as well: We will “hold them accountable in the White House.”

LOL....Trump is pro-gay.....LOL. Biden supports what the corporations want him to support. Historically, they were not okay with supporting gay people but most corporations like to support gay people now as a way to make them look good to the public while doing awful other things that endanger the planet and sometimes mistreat people, whether it is pollution, unsafe products or their own employees. Anything to be able to maximize profits because that is all that matters....right? (/sarcasm)

Why Trump is the most pro-gay president in U.S. history

    We should ask:

    - Did the Dolphin Democrats praise the president when he announced his “Initiative to Decriminalize Homosexuality” around the World?

    - Did the Dolphin Democrats praise the president when he named Richard Grennell as Ambassador to Germany and four others?

    - Did the Dolphin Democrats praise the president when he asked Congress in his 2019 State of the Union Address, to make the needed budget commitment to eliminate the HIV and AIDS epidemic in the United States within 10 years?

    - Did the Dolphin Democrats praise the president when, as part of his campaign to end the HIV and AIDS epidemic in ten years, his administration announced that 200,000 uninsured Americans will gain access to HIV-preventive medicines at no cost?

    - Did the Dolphin Democrats praise the president when he nominated Patrick Bumatay, an openly gay Filipino man, as a judge in the important to 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals?

The answer to all those questions is a resounding NO. Why? Because this doesn’t fit the narrative that the president is a homophobe and anti-LGBT.
