Being true to yourself will always come at the cost of losing those who don't want to acknowledge your truth.

I lost a few friends after I came out. They weren't great friends to begin with, and now I know why.

My guy, though, lost the majority of his family. His mom died without ever having accepted him, and their last words to each other were in anger. I know he still carries that with him.

There are many people who are still homophobic and will not change.
It's best to stay away from people like that even if they are family members.

It's sad but not surprising that bias still exists in Hollywood.

    HOWEVER...

Actors fail to get roles for all kinds of reasons and if you ask the actor it will always be somebody else's fault - and usually due to some producer's personal grudge or bias.

He might have appeared in some notable films but it's not like he was ever an A-list actor. I think if you ask most str8 people what they think of Matt Bomer, they'll say "...Who?"

Or maybe it's nothing more than pretty boys in Hollywood are a dime a dozen and Matt Bomer, hot as he is, isn't exactly Laurence Olivier in the acting department.

I'm sure Matt Bomer "says" a lot of things.

Though I wouldn't be surprised if this is true. Democrats - especially those in the Hollywood entertainment industry - are the biggest hypocrites on the planet.

Having been true to myself from a young age, by declaring I'd grow up to marry a man, at the beginning of the 70's. In rural Australia, that still had the mind set of America's 1950's.
I well know the price that can come with being true to one's self.
Why I seen the guy Heath Ledger played in Brokeback Mountain, as weak.

But Matt has experienced this from Liberal Hollywood; fascinating.

I applaud the guy for having the balls to come out.
I'm sure that there are other more liberal producers/casting directors, etc., and will acknowledge him in the future though.
And I especially like the title of the article: "It's a sacrifice he was willing to make.".
    Good for him.

I beg to differ on this one. The hierarchy of a very few trolls in these Forums who hate, slander, blame, lie, accuse and gossip, and then have the GALL to paint themselves out to be the victims when they can't take what they have just dished out are without question, the biggest hypocrites on the planet.

You would think it would open doors in Hollywood, not close them. I'm not familiar with his work. Can he pass? That wouldn't matter for ordinary roles but they're not going to cast him in a lead that will include the obligatory sex scene.

I'm sure he won't get some movie roles because he has come out as gay, but like bro4bro said, there are many reasons actors don't get roles they want. Casting directors have 100's of actors to choose from for any given role.

OTOH, he is a fine actor. I saw him on Broadway last year in Boys in the Band. He did a fine job.

BTW, Netflix is releasing the new filming of Boys in the Band (featuring last year's Broadway cast) on September 30.

[And - totally unrelated - for those on here who think that good looking younger guys never fall for older men - Matt Bomer is married to a guy who is 14 years older, and not anywhere near as hot as he is.]

I took his post as meaning that Matt's acting abilities cannot compare to the brilliance of Lawrence Olivier.

Hard to say if he is a really great actor or not - since that depends on the roles he gets - and most great acting is done on the stage, rather than films. (One wouldn't notice Olivier's exceptional talent if he were playing a Batman/Spiderman/Superman role.) Living in LA, with a husband and kids, he may have made the choice not to live on the stage on Broadway or London. There are (or were) quite a few great gay actors out there, who have mostly made their career on the stage or British TV dramas - Derick Jacoby, Ben Wishaw, Kevin Spacey (yeah, the sexual assault guy), Ian McKellen, Zachary Quinto, Luke Evans.

Although he' is likely never to get a traditional "romantic lead" in Hollywood, he's still unusually handsome at 43, so he could still be cast in a that sort of role in a British or European production, where there is not so much identification with the sexuality of the actor.

I know this sounds harsh but I wouldn't be surprised if someone like Matt Bomer pulled a late "Me too" claiming he only got to where he is/was by putting out or breaking out the knee pads.

That's very common in Hollywood, by the way. If you want fame and stardom be prepared to sell your soul...but ore than likely - your family jewels.

Very valid points! Like, Hollywood is FILLED with brillant actors and some, well, not so much!
Again, I guess one man's wine is another man's poison.
Some people who win an Oscar for best actor or whatever, just leaves me shaking my head in disbelief.
I just wish Matt all the best in his future endeavors and hope that he can overcome this predjudiced cloud that has been placed above his (handsome) head.

I don’t know, he seem to do a pretty good job of acting in the movie where he played the father who I guess gets injured in an accident in the forest with his son, who ends up having to carry him back to safety only to find out he died On his shoulders… I can’t remember the name of the film but he seemed to do a pretty good job in that film…
