California Wants Cars to Run on Electricity. It’s Going to Need a Much Bigger Grid

Leaning on the hood of a shiny red electric Ford Mustang, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order Wednesday to end the sale of new gas-burning cars in his state in 15 years.

    Now comes the hard part.

Energy consultants and academics say converting all passenger cars and trucks to run on electricity in California could raise power demand by as much as 25%. That poses a major challenge for a state already facing periodic rolling blackouts as it rapidly transitions to renewable energy.

“We’ve got 15 years to do the work,” said Pedro Pizarro, chief executive of Edison International, owner of Southern California Edison, a utility serving 15 million people in the state. “Frankly the state agencies are going to have to do their part. We’ve got to get to the permitting processes, the approvals; all of that work is going to have to get accelerated to meet [Wednesday’s] target.”

Currently, California faces a crunchtime in the early evening as solar power falls off and demand to power air conditioners remains relatively high. Car charging presents a new potential issue: What happens when too many drivers want a high-energy, fast charge at the same time?

The crazy thing is California passed a law like this before , then Enron restricted their grid power because the company took advantage of more stupid regulation. Environmentalists stopped power plant production and California wants to be the immigration haven of the world which increases population 1 million per year. And then they won’t manage their forests which makes the state the biggest air polluter in the world. Tesla is moving out of state because they can’t get the building permits to build factories to produce cars. How stupid can you possibly be?

I heard californians already are paying one of the highest electricity bills thanks to ''green ''energy projects, which are expensive and which are not green at all since solar and wind requires lot of natural resources that come from mining, so where they will get so much electricity and who is going to pay for all of that? Well we know who is going to pay + california can grown more debt icon_lol.gif

based on a tesla s and 37 mile commute you need 6-12 solar panels to charge the car.

I dont see this as being a problem whatsoever.

but with the advent of AI cars, combined with the de-automobilization of tens of millions of old people.
car owernership is about to plummet by 50-90% in the next 15 years.

this will be every parking lot in cities in 10-15 years. The real estate is too valuable to not use it, and it will be free money by the lot owners. I work for a company right now that buys BARN roofs, real estate. They install the panels and and the farmer takes a cut. It is a self sustaining payoff, more and more free money for farmers and free real estate for the solar company.
