Can someone explain this to me?

    I don't get why lifting tiny weights like 5-10lbs results in having beautiful definition whereas heavier weights don't and just make you bulky and strong.

    Is it because you can do many more reps with the light weights and so you work the muscle?

    Also, how light should the weight be and how many reps to start getting some nice ripped definition?

    Good question!

    What I've discovered is that when I lift lighter weights, i tend to slow down, focus on the muscle group or muscle I'm working on and do more reps - which puts more strain on the muscle over the long-term. Lighter weights might also let you concentrate on specific muscles rather than the whole area.

    I also think it depends on what muscle group you are working. When I work arms and shoulders, I tend to do 4 heavy and 4 light exercises in the same day (I work one muscle group a day - legs everyday). Chest and back: I tend to alternate heavy and light days.

    Legs are just balls out heavy. (Yes, I'm a freak - I am one of the few who loves working out legs)

    But ultimately, I think it's the focus with light weights that gives the definition.

    My game plan has always been lift heavy with low reps to build the muscle first. Then once you are happy with what you have, go with high reps with lower weight to define it. Always target the muscle you intend to work then concentrate on perfect form. Your results will come a lot faster and all your workouts will count.

    It has to do with load and muscle adaptation....
    when a muscle is stressed...for example by adding more weight onto a dumbbell the muscle "adapts" by becoming larger>>> Hypertrophy and thus stronger
